Segregation helps ensure that recyclable and biodegradable materials are diverted from landfills, which in turn reduces environmental pollution, lowers landfill costs, and enables resource recovery. Several studies highlight that the success of waste segregation largely depends on community participation, public awareness, and effective waste management policies (Rahman et al., 2016). Moreover, it can play a crucial role in minimizing the environmental and economic burdens associated with waste disposal.

The benefits of waste segregation are widely recognized in both developed and developing countries. In developed nations, where waste management infrastructure is generally more advanced, waste segregation has become an essential practice. Additionally, social factors such as cultural norms, lack of civic responsibility, and resistance to behavioral change can impede the widespread adoption of segregation practices. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

Solid waste management has become a pressing issue for cities and municipalities worldwide, as rapid urbanization, population growth, and increasing consumption patterns have led to an alarming rise in waste generation. According to the World Bank, the global generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) is expected to increase from 2.01 billion metric tons in 2016 to 3.4 billion metric tons by 2050 (Hoornweg & Bhada-Tata, 2012). In many urban areas, the existing waste management systems are struggling to keep up with this growing demand, resulting in poor waste disposal practices, overcrowded landfills, and significant environmental pollution. One of the most effective strategies to address these challenges is solid waste segregation, which involves separating waste at the source into categories such as organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable materials. However, despite its potential benefits, the widespread implementation of waste segregation remains limited due to a range of social, economic, and logistical challenges.

The problem lies in the low levels of waste segregation at the household and community level, which hinders the efficiency and effectiveness of waste management systems. In many developing countries, waste segregation is not widely practiced due to a lack of awareness, education, and incentives for individuals to separate their waste properly. As a result, recyclable and biodegradable materials are often mixed with non-recyclables, leading to higher landfill waste volumes and a greater environmental burden. These challenges include low public awareness, insufficient infrastructure, and cultural resistance to behavioral change. To overcome these obstacles, there is a need for more comprehensive policies and public engagement efforts that emphasize the importance of waste segregation, alongside investments in waste management infrastructure. The adoption of solid waste segregation at the community level can contribute to more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly waste management systems, but it requires concerted efforts from governments, waste management agencies, and the public to create the necessary conditions for success. Without addressing these challenges, the potential benefits of waste segregation will remain unrealized, and the environmental and economic costs of poor waste management will continue to escalate.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Solid Waste Segregation as a Strategy for Improved Waste Management. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To assess the current waste management practices in Lagos.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of solid waste segregation in reducing overall waste volume.
  3. To analyze the environmental impact of implementing solid waste segregation.
  4. To identify the challenges and barriers to successful waste segregation.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

1.6. Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to transform waste management practices through the adoption of solid waste segregation at the source. Solid waste segregation refers to the practice of separating different types of waste, such as organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable materials, before they enter the waste disposal system. This study aims to highlight how segregating waste at the household, commercial, and industrial levels can significantly improve waste management processes, reduce environmental degradation, and promote sustainability. As global attention turns increasingly to climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, solid waste segregation presents a practical, scalable solution that aligns with broader sustainability goals. Through this research, the study seeks to influence policy decisions at local, regional, and national levels, encouraging governments to prioritize waste segregation as a key strategy in their environmental and waste management policies. Ultimately, the findings of this study will underscore how solid waste segregation can play a pivotal role in creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities for future generations.

The study examines Solid Waste Segregation as a Strategy for Improved Waste Management. A study of LAWMA – Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Ijora, Lagos.

 

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Solid Waste Segregation: Solid waste segregation refers to the process of separating different types of waste materials at the point of generation, such as in households, businesses, or industrial sites. Waste is sorted into distinct categories like recyclable materials (e.g., paper, glass, metals, plastics), organic waste (e.g., food scraps, yard waste), and non-recyclable or hazardous waste (e.g., batteries, medical waste). The primary aim of waste segregation is to facilitate more efficient recycling, composting, and safe disposal, reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, and minimizing the amount of waste sent to landfills or incineration.
  2. Strategy: A strategy is a plan of action designed to achieve a specific goal or set of objectives.
