CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

Fees payments by students in Federal Polytechnic Nekede are made through cash deposits, to the Polytechnic’s accounts in specific bank branches. Plymouth and Martin (2009) stress that “For nearly every business, the simple act of collecting payments from consumers is actually quite complex. Organizations want to make it easy and convenient for customers to pay, so they offer multiple choices of payment types and channels”. Therefore, the project provides an alternative method that enables secure online fees payment by students and/or their sponsors.

1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Federal Polytechnic Nekede has a large number of students who are supposed to pay all the polytechnic fees through cash deposits to the polytechnic’s accounts in specific bank branches. This method of paying fees has not been efficient enough especially during periods of tests and examinations when most of the students are paying fees to meet the requirements for entering examination rooms. The process of fees payment in such periods is characterized by long queues, too much waiting by students and congestion at banks where payments are made. Students queue to pay fees and those who do not reach counters within the bank’s working hours are advised to return the next day. This process has always resulted in students missing their lectures, tests and/or examinations while they are queuing to make payments in banks. It has also resulted to too much costs and a lot of time used in transferring and withdrawing money whenever sponsors of students make money transfers to students who can pay its fees at specific bank branches. The process requires sponsors of students from wherever they are to send money to students through either bank, mobile money or any other possible way(s) so that students can pay the polytechnic fees. This consumes time and sponsors incur extra costs in this process of sending money to students. Now, the method of paying for school fees is quite tasking and time consuming. First, one has to generate invoice before making a cash deposit at designated bank branches. The invoice generation for school fees payment is a fine development however, it has require students visiting the School Portal to rectify issues associated with invoice generation. Sometimes the complete details of the invoice generated do not appear after generation. It was upon this background that the researcher suggested an alternative method which enables secure online fees payment by students and/or their sponsors. This payment method will enable students to pay their school fees in the comfort of their homes without stress.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

The problems the bursary unit encounters with respect to the online student’s fee may be attributed to the following:

  1. The inability of management to provide a receipt as at when due.
  2. Many of the staff members are women when they are on maternity leave, writing of receipt becomes a problem.
  • The writing of receipt takes a lot of time.

Today, the computer has made all most everything easy, this, as a result, will help in many things, students have been encountering the problems of getting receipt having to pay their school fees. They cluster at the bursary unit where the receipt is issued manually.  This has caused a lot of problems among the students, for instance, the strong will always push aside the weaker ones in order to get their receipt fast. The development of the website is not all that is required, but how to protect information uploaded to the net, also deserved some attention and ensure that the students who didn’t register or submit personal profile will not be receive a receipt.  It is on this ground that emphasis on information security is indispensable so that even if packets are intercepted by intruders, it will be almost impossible for the intruder to access the real information of the WebPages, thus having information that meaningless to them.

  • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this study is to design and implement an effective and efficient of online school fees payment system that enables students and their sponsor to securely pay polytechnic fees online using MasterCard technology.

  1. Students can make payment of school fees sitting anywhere, anytime around the world. It is a 365/24 services and such reduces long queue.
  2. Enabling student to pay with their credit and debit card.
  3. Reduces time-consuming.

4..The system will also give login access to both the Bursary Unit and Head of Departments to generate annual student’s school fees payment report.

To design a system that will securely store and retrieve student’s payment details.

  • SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study was carried out for Federal Polytechnic Nekede and was intended to offer an extra channel for school fees payment, through the development of a secure online fees payment system. The study focused on the development of a web-based system that allows secure online school fees payment for Federal Polytechnic Nekede. The system will be used by students and their sponsors to pay the polytechnic’s school fees online, and by the polytechnic’s account offices to verify student’s payments. The system captures both the student’s details and the financial information after payments are made. The system is limited to Computer Science Evening students only.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Literature asserts that, for nearly every business, the simple act of collecting payments from consumers is actually quite complex and yet organizations want to make it easy and convenient for customers to pay, so they offer multiple choices of payment types and channels (Plymouth and Martin, 2009). Therefore, this project proposed the development of an alternative platform that enables students and their sponsors securely pay school fees online from wherever they are using credit and/or debit master cards. This will reduce the lengthy queues and congestion at banks for payments. Furthermore, this project will also help to reduce the number of students that currently miss lectures, sitting for their tests and examinations while waiting to reach bank counters to make payments. Sponsors of students, especially those abroad, will save money and time since it will no longer necessitate them to first transfer money to students before the fee is paid.

1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Some of the major constraints of this work include;

Finance: Finance is constraint experienced while carrying out this research. The inadequate of finance to carry out this research slowed down this research work, especially the cost of paying for the MasterCard payment verification and E-Transact. Despite the limitations, every effort was geared towards accomplishing this project.

Power supply: Nonavailability of stable, efficient and reliable power supply is a limitation of this project as it is dependent on electricity.

Resources: The cost of hardware, software, site design, online distribution cost, and maintenance of the site; all these are factored into the cost of providing the product.

1.8  DEFINITION OF TERMS

Computer Network: Computer Network is a system that connects two or more computers together using a communication link.

Database: This refers to a large store of related data on a computer that can be accessed and modified by the user.

Databases: A systematically arranged collection of computer data, structured so that it can be automatically retrieved or manipulated. It is also called databank.

E-Transact: Electronic Transaction is a multi-application, multi-network and multi-channel electronic payment platform that supports all major networks such as MasterCard. It is the first online real-time payment solution that allows account holders to pay for services in the Educational sectors.
