INTRODUCTION

For instance, passages such as 1 Timothy 2:12, which states, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet,” have been used to justify these restrictions (Kostenberger, 2010). However, contemporary scholarship has increasingly challenged these interpretations, arguing that they reflect cultural biases rather than divine mandates (Schüssler Fiorenza, 1983).

Recent studies have highlighted the significant contributions of women in early Christian communities. Scholars like Karen Jo Torjesen (1993) have documented the roles of women as deacons, prophets, and even apostles in the early church. These findings suggest that the early Christian movement was more inclusive of women in leadership roles than previously thought. This perspective is supported by the work of Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, who argues that the marginalization of women in Christian ministry is a result of patriarchal structures that developed over time, rather than an inherent aspect of Christian doctrine (Schüssler Fiorenza, 1983).

These denominations often argue that their positions are based on a faithful reading of scripture and adherence to long-standing church traditions (Grudem, 2004). However, critics argue that these positions are more reflective of cultural and historical contexts than of the core tenets of Christianity (Brooten, 1982).

The intersectionality of gender with other social categories, such as race and class, further complicates the issue. For example, African American women in ministry often face additional challenges related to both gender and racial discrimination (Gilkes, 2001). 1.2. Statement of the Problem

The problem is multifaceted, involving historical, theological, and sociocultural dimensions that require a comprehensive and critical assessment.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the historical context of gender issues within Christian ministry and how it has evolved over time.
2. To analyze the current role of women in various denominations of Christian ministry and identify any barriers they may face.
3. To assess the impact of gender stereotypes and biases on the opportunities available to women in Christian ministry.
4. To explore the theological perspectives on gender equality and the implications for women’s leadership in the church.

The research questions are buttressed below:

2. What are the current roles of women in different denominations of Christian ministry and what barriers do they face?
3. How do gender stereotypes and biases impact the opportunities available to women in Christian ministry?
4. What are the theological perspectives on gender equality and how do they affect women’s leadership in the church?

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines a Critical Assessment of Gender Issues and the Role of Women in Christian Ministry. The study is limited to women in selected Pentecostal Churches in Lagos.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Assessment: An assessment is a systematic evaluation or analysis of something. It involves gathering information, making judgments, and drawing conclusions based on evidence and criteria. In the context of a study, an assessment typically aims to understand the effectiveness, significance, or impact of a particular subject or phenomenon.

Gender Issues: Gender issues refer to the various social, cultural, economic, and political challenges and disparities that arise due to differences in gender. These issues can include inequality in opportunities, treatment, and rights between men and women, as well as the roles and expectations society places on individuals based on their gender. Gender issues often encompass topics such as gender discrimination, gender-based violence, and the gender pay gap.

Role: The term “role” refers to the function or position that someone or something has in a particular context or situation. It involves the responsibilities, duties, and behaviors expected of an individual or entity in a specific setting. In social and organizational contexts, roles help define how individuals interact with each other and contribute to the overall functioning of a group or system.

Women: Women are adult human females. The term encompasses a diverse group of individuals who may have different experiences, backgrounds, and identities. In discussions about gender issues and roles, “women” often refers to the social, economic, and political experiences and challenges faced by female individuals, as well as their contributions and achievements in various fields.

Christian Ministry: Christian ministry refers to the activities, duties, and services carried out by individuals or groups within the Christian faith to promote and practice their religious beliefs. This can include preaching, teaching, pastoral care, community service, and other forms of religious leadership and support. Christian ministry aims to spread the teachings of Christianity, provide spiritual guidance, and serve the needs of the community.
