CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

Agricultural is one of the most importance sectors of Nigeria economy. Its importance arises from the abundance of agricultural resources and the high percentage of the active population of the people engage in various ways. Agriculture is by no means a homogenous industry, it is made of small family farm large corporate organization, credit and other marketing and processing firm, transportation networks, wholesaler restaurants and food fiber retailer. Is important to note that agricultural is very crucial for the survival of any economy be it socialist, communist or capital. This is due to the fact that it is basically concerned with production of food which is the basic necessity of life, it also account or a researchable percentage of raw material supply for our industries.

 1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The role of agricultural cooperative toward increased food production in Isiala Mbano cannot be overemphasized. From time immemorial. Isiala Mbano had been known as a key players of agricultural productivity in Imo State. In developing countries as in the case of Nigeria, agriculture dominates the nation’s economy. Statistically reviews that 90 percent of Nigeria total food production comes from small terms.

It terms employment agriculture is by far the most importance sector of Nigeria economy engaging about 70% of the labour force. Agricultural holding are generally small and scattered, family is often of the subsistence variety characterized by simple tools and shifting cultivation. It is widely recognized that cooperative form an indispensable component. Through community organization cooperative serves the basis and plant form for bringing together the economically weak member of the society with a view of enhancing their individual capacities (Akali, 1991). The contributions of cooperative to the economy especially in the developing countries are enormous, ranging from provision of credit to its member and souring of inputs at reasonable price to scale of member produce (Oknonkwo, 2009). Cooperative are defined as an autonomous association of persons who unite voluntarily to meet their common economic and social needs and aspiration through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.

For many years now, the big news and complaints of our people in Isiala Mbano, including the educated ones is that we have left agricultural which is the bed rock and mainstream of Isiala Mbano inhabitant. Not until recently, nobody had demonstrated any willingness to do something about it, but due to the economy situation in Nigeria, the inhabitant of Isiala Mbano are now getting involve in agricultural because of the fall in crude oil, that have being a problem to the growth of Nigerian economy.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

For some years now, the cooperative societies toward increased production of agricultural goods and product have suffered from a lot of problems, which includes, lack of finance, lack of transportation, lack of storage facilities, absence of promotion etc. These problem have made it that most marketers who wanted to join the cooperative have decided to withdraw.

In Nigeria today, the rate at which people join the cooperative societies is relatively low just because the people have often ask this type of question “can it help us” which are the cause of the people laxity in joining the cooperative society since this is the case, the member of the marketing cooperative societies have been trying as much as could to enlighten people on the benefit of being a cooperator. However it is not all that true, to as the makers of cooperative lack proper funds with reference to come to their counter parts in the nation. Ineffectual role of the cooperative society production in the economic development can fund its origin in many factors.

 

A brief appraisal of some of the factors will be necessary.

Finance: We all know that finance is the all and all in this world for any business to stand, marketing cooperatives towards the increase production of agricultural goods involved regular finance to ensure continuity of the truth that the cooperative societies have only factor limited fund. This also led to other factors, such as lack of instruments and may not also have enough requirements. The trust people which is limited tool to have adversely affected the production of agricultural products. This has so much effected the marketing of agricultural products by the producer because they only begin to think about bringing out their product to the market.

Transportation: Not only that the cooperative society and the increase production of agricultural product lack fund, they also have transportation people since they do not have enough proceeds, they have all at the end have little money in their pause. The little fund cannot help them buy vans that can convey them to where they will market their products. Again source of the agricultural cooperative are located in the remote area where they are no access road. Non accessibility of these road have made it impossible for them to improve the production of agricultural products.

Storage Facility: Another obvious reason to the insufficient role of cooperative is lack of storage facility giving that they are deciding which agricultural product is not perishable and which is easily perishable there is need for the market to advice the producer to have good storages outlets for the preservation of these products units they purchased.

ABSENCE OF PROMOTION: This is also one of the major factors of the inefficient role of cooperative towards eased production agricultural products. Promotion is important to any marketing organization. The cooperative should ensure that they promote the product produced by production sector/production in order to increase agricultural production. In due consideration of before mentioned factors, cooperative play lesson role in the economic development in Nigeria development in Nigeria. However the cooperative cannot tell their aim

1.3  THE OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The cooperative toward increased production agricultural product have certain objective in mind before its establishment. The objective includes the following.

  • To ensure that the cost of agricultural good are reduced.
  • They also help the producer by creating awareness of the existing good, which will attract the public to patronize them, all general at increasing the production of agricultural product.
  • They also try as much as could to enlighten people on the benefit of being a cooperator.

  • What are the sources of fund?
  • How do you market the product?
  • What method of promotion do you use?
  • Do you experience any other problem?
  • Is there any computation in the marketing style you use?

 

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of these study will be beneficial to the institution of higher learning where cooperative student be trained. It will identify modern facilities necessary for be instruction cooperates student. This research work will explore the world off work and working facilities in use. This knowledge will help cooperative to know those tools and how to operate them.

Mores so, business organization will benefit they employ these cooperative. This research work will also help the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to know the extent of coverage of the curriculum by institution under study.

1.6  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

       Imo State is the focus of the study, and it is made up of various local government areas. This is based on five major urban centuries in the state vis, Owerri, Mbano, and some parts of Imo State. There are various types of cooperative societies that embark on production and marketing. They include:

  • Farms milt purpose cooperative societies (FMCS)
  • Multiple cooperative society (MCS)
  • Credit cooperative society (CCS)
  • Product seller cooperative societies (PSCS) these are other government establishment like Imo State agricultural development project (ADP) Imo State cooperative wholesale association (ISCWA).

1.7  LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

  1. Respondent Attitude: Good members of cooperative are illiterates and lack of experience and intelligent answer to any oral interview. In the most case have to use our native language to make point clear.
  2. Transportation Cost: The cost of transportation as effected the marketing cooperative most of the members in cooperative are located in a romantic areas are such too much money was spent to cover which market selected for the study the road leading to where the societies are located are very bad and in most cases had to use motor cycles as an adversatives means of transport.

1.8  DEFINITION OF TERMS

According to Emere A. Ogujiofor (M. Inst PM) but cooperation society is an association of person who voluntarily induced together through a business organization to achieve them common needs while equitability contributing their required capital.

PRODUCTION OF AGRICULTURAL: Is mainly for production of food stuff and agro-related products while the collecting cooperative farmer production agro-related products for sale for the members with the intention to make farmers gain from their products.
