In many African societies, the transition from ATR to Christianity was not total displacement but transformation, where Christian teachings were understood through indigenous religious lenses (Mbiti, 1990).

Christian congregations across sub-Saharan Africa frequently integrate drums, call-and-response chants, and ecstatic spiritual expressions that resemble ATR ceremonies (Anderson, 2001). • Statement of the Problem

Christianity has grown rapidly in the Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria, over the past decades. However, despite its widespread acceptance, Christianity in this region coexists alongside African Traditional Religion (ATR), which continues to shape the cultural, social, and spiritual life of many inhabitants. The problem arises from the complex interaction between these two religious systems, where ATR practices and beliefs still influence Christian worship, theology, and communal life. This blending sometimes leads to tensions within the Christian community and raises questions about the authenticity and purity of Christian faith in the area.

In Ikom, many Christians engage in rituals and customs rooted in ATR, such as ancestor veneration, traditional festivals, and indigenous healing practices, even as they attend church services. This syncretism poses challenges for church leaders who struggle to address practices they deem incompatible with orthodox Christian doctrines. The problem is that this creates confusion among believers, especially the youth, about what constitutes true Christian faith, potentially weakening the spiritual foundation of the church.

Moreover, missionary churches that were introduced during colonial times often promoted Christianity by rejecting indigenous beliefs as superstitious or evil. Christianity: Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes belief in one God, salvation through faith in Jesus, and the teachings found in the Bible, and it is the world’s largest religion.
