ABSTRACT

The study examined the immoral lifestyle among secondary schools in Igbo-Eze South L.G.A. in Enugu state. Effect and Consequence. Four research objectives were adopted for the study, namely: to identify the various forms of immoral behaviors prevalent among secondary school students in Igbo-Eze South L.G.A; to explore the factors contributing to immoral lifestyles among adolescents in the region; to assess the impact of immoral lifestyles on students’ academic performance and overall well-being; to evaluate the consequences of these immoral behaviors on the school environment and the broader community. The target population consists of Secondary Schools students in Igbo-Eze South L. G. A. in Enugu State. To select the needed samples for this study, the researcher used a total number of one hundred (100) Secondary Schools students in Igbo-Eze South L. G. A. in Enugu State. The research hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square Statistics. The study recommended that schools should implement comprehensive mental health support systems that address the emotional and psychological challenges associated with immoral lifestyles. The study concluded that Immoral lifestyles will affect students’ academic performance and overall well-being.

INTRODUCTION

The phenomenon of immorality among secondary school students in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area (L.G.A.) of Enugu State has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Researchers have documented various forms of immoral behaviors, including drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, and delinquent conduct. According to Okafor (2020), these behaviors are often influenced by a combination of societal, familial, and peer pressures, which create an environment conducive to the proliferation of such lifestyles. Many students come from homes where parental guidance is minimal or absent, leading to a lack of moral direction. Nwankwo (2019) highlights that children in such environments are more susceptible to negative influences from peers and media, which can exacerbate immoral behaviors. The increasing prevalence of single-parent households and economic hardships further compounds this issue, often leaving children without adequate supervision or support.

Peer pressure also plays a crucial role in shaping the behaviors of adolescents in Igbo-Eze South. The aim of the study is to examine the immoral lifestyle among secondary schools in igbo-eze south L. G. A. in Enugu state. Effect and Consequence. The specific objectives are:

1. To identify the various forms of immoral behaviors prevalent among secondary school students in Igbo-Eze South L.G.A.
2. To explore the factors contributing to immoral lifestyles among adolescents in the region.
3. To assess the impact of immoral lifestyles on students’ academic performance and overall well-being.
4. To evaluate the consequences of these immoral behaviors on the school environment and the broader community.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Immoral lifestyles will not affect students’ academic performance and overall well-being.

H1: Immoral lifestyles will affect students’ academic performance and overall well-being.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Immoral Lifestyle: An immoral lifestyle refers to a way of living that involves behaviors and choices that violate societal norms, ethical standards, or moral principles. This can include actions such as substance abuse, sexual promiscuity, dishonesty, and other forms of delinquency. Such lifestyles often disregard the well-being of oneself and others, leading to negative outcomes for individuals and communities.

Secondary School: A secondary school is an educational institution that provides education to students typically between the ages of 12 and 18, following primary education. It is designed to prepare students for higher education, vocational training, or entry into the workforce.
