INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background to the Study

The practice of marriage within Christian communities has evolved over time, and this evolution is particularly marked by the distinction between traditional marriage ceremonies and church weddings. Traditional marriage, often rooted in indigenous customs, is deeply intertwined with cultural heritage and local practices. In contrast, church weddings are influenced by Christian religious beliefs and institutionalized practices, reflecting a blend of theology, social norms, and community expectations. Understanding these two forms of marriage—traditional and religious—requires an exploration of both their cultural significance and theological underpinnings.

The traditional marriage process among many Christian communities is characterized by rituals that emphasize cultural identity, family, and community involvement. According to Ochieng’ (2019), traditional marriages serve as significant cultural events, often involving elaborate ceremonies, dowries, and familial blessings. These practices can vary widely between regions but share common threads of promoting unity and continuity within the community. Such marriages typically occur before a public gathering of family and friends, where the community plays a pivotal role in endorsing the union. Traditional marriages often prioritize the bride’s family, with a focus on cultural exchange and social integration, sometimes independent of religious rituals. The emphasis on lineage, dowries, and family approval highlights the communal and ancestral aspects of marriage in contrast to the religious, sacramental view emphasized in Christian teachings.

On the other hand, church weddings in Christian traditions are rooted in theological doctrines and the sacrament of marriage as defined by Christian theology. As Schutte (2017) points out, in Christian doctrine, marriage is considered a sacred covenant between the couple and God, transcending cultural norms. Church weddings are often characterized by specific religious rituals, including vows, prayers, scripture readings, and the presence of clergy. These rituals are designed not only to sanctify the union but also to reflect Christian beliefs in love, fidelity, and the divine purpose of marriage. Church weddings are typically seen as a public declaration of faith and a commitment to live according to Christian teachings, with God as a central figure in the marital covenant. The church wedding’s emphasis on religious ritual and divine blessing stands in stark contrast to the familial and cultural focus of traditional marriages.

However, there has been increasing overlap between these two forms of marriage, especially in post-colonial societies where Christian religious practices coexist with traditional customs. Studies have shown that many Christian couples now combine elements of both traditions, creating hybrid marriage ceremonies that incorporate both cultural and religious symbols. In a study of African Christian marriages, Akinbo (2020) observed that couples often integrate traditional customs such as dowry exchange or family feasts into church weddings, blending cultural significance with religious ritual. This hybridization reflects the dynamic nature of marriage practices in contexts where modern Christian beliefs coexist with deeply entrenched traditional customs. Furthermore, some Christian communities permit or even encourage this fusion as a way to maintain cultural identity while adhering to Christian values.

From a sociological perspective, the choice between traditional marriage and church weddings can also be influenced by social and economic factors. According to Adesina and Adeoye (2018), the decision to have a traditional versus a church wedding can often depend on the couple’s socioeconomic status, social expectations, and geographical location. For instance, in urban areas where church weddings are more common, couples might opt for a church ceremony to align with modern, Westernized ideals of marriage. In rural or conservative communities, however, traditional weddings remain the dominant form, as they are more affordable and aligned with local values. Additionally, the choice may reflect an individual’s desire to honor family traditions, gain social approval, or seek spiritual fulfillment through a religious ceremony. As such, the decision between a traditional marriage and a church wedding can often be seen as a negotiation between personal preference, social pressures, and cultural heritage.

Lastly, the increasing importance of individual choice and personal expression in modern society has led to a rethinking of marriage ceremonies altogether. Scholars like Campbell (2021) argue that modern Christian couples are increasingly seeking to customize their weddings, with many opting for alternative ceremonies that might blend elements of both traditional and religious practices or even incorporate secular elements such as personalized vows or symbolic rituals. This shift reflects broader societal trends toward individualism and the changing nature of religious observance. While church weddings still hold significant value in many Christian communities, the desire for flexibility and personalization is reshaping how marriage is perceived and performed. The growing acceptance of diverse wedding forms challenges traditional boundaries and underscores the evolving understanding of marriage in contemporary Christian contexts.

Statement of the Problem

Marriage has long been regarded as a foundational institution within both religious and cultural contexts. Among Christians, the evolution of marriage ceremonies has led to a distinction between traditional and church weddings, each of which carries distinct cultural, social, and religious meanings. While traditional marriage practices reflect deep cultural heritage and community values, church weddings are grounded in Christian theology and are seen as a sacred covenant between the couple and God. However, the rise of modernity, globalized culture, and shifting social norms has led to a blending or even a conflict between these two forms of marriage. The issue that arises, therefore, is how Christians navigate the intersection of tradition and religion in their marriage ceremonies and the implications this has for both personal identity and community cohesion.

Despite the growing body of literature on marriage rituals, there remains a lack of comprehensive studies comparing the practical, cultural, and theological distinctions between traditional marriages and church weddings. While both forms of marriage share some common elements, such as public commitment and familial approval, they are fundamentally different in terms of their underlying principles, rituals, and societal functions. This gap in research limits our understanding of how contemporary Christians choose between or integrate both types of marriage ceremonies, and the social, emotional, and spiritual outcomes of such choices. Additionally, the question remains as to how these two practices are perceived by different generations, particularly in communities where traditional customs hold strong cultural significance but where Christian institutions influence the marriage process.

Another critical aspect that needs exploration is the role of gender, family, and community in shaping marital decisions. In many Christian societies, traditional marriage rituals often emphasize the bride’s family and community involvement, which can sometimes conflict with the individualistic nature of church weddings. Church weddings, with their religious emphasis, may prioritize the couple’s spiritual relationship and commitment to God, often downplaying the role of extended family and community. This contrast can create tensions, especially in contexts where families play a significant role in marital decision-making. Understanding the ways in which gender roles, familial expectations, and community values shape the choice between traditional marriage and church wedding practices is essential for understanding the broader social dynamics within Christian communities.

Furthermore, the influence of socio-economic factors on the decision-making process is an important but under-explored area. Church weddings, especially those in more urbanized or economically privileged contexts, often come with high costs, including venue fees, clergy fees, and formal attire. Conversely, traditional weddings might be perceived as more affordable and culturally appropriate in certain regions. However, in some contexts, the desire for social status and conformity to modern, Westernized wedding practices may prompt individuals to favor church weddings despite the financial burden. Conversely, some may prefer the simplicity and cultural integrity of traditional marriage rituals. A deeper investigation is needed to understand how economic status, social class, and even geographical location influence the decision between these two forms of marriage.

In addition, the growing trend of hybrid wedding ceremonies, which blend elements of both traditional and church wedding rituals, has introduced new challenges to understanding the clear distinctions between these forms of marriage. Many Christian couples, particularly in post-colonial societies, are opting for ceremonies that incorporate both religious and cultural elements. This raises questions about the authenticity, legitimacy, and theological implications of such hybrid ceremonies. Moreover, the acceptance of hybrid weddings within both religious and cultural communities is not always uniform, and in some cases, it may lead to social divisions. It is essential to explore how such hybridization is negotiated, accepted, or contested by both church leaders and traditional elders, and how it affects the cohesion of Christian communities.

Finally, as marriage practices continue to evolve, it is critical to consider how the changing landscape of Christian wedding rituals reflects broader social changes, including shifts in religious observance, gender roles, and family structures. Contemporary attitudes toward marriage, including increasing rates of interfaith or intercultural unions and changing perspectives on marital roles, may influence the future of both traditional and church weddings. As social norms around marriage continue to shift, there is a pressing need to investigate the long-term impacts of these changes on the understanding and practice of Christian marriage. By addressing these questions, we can better understand the future trajectory of marriage rituals within Christian communities, and how these rituals will continue to evolve in response to both cultural and religious transformations.
