ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of prosperity gospel in Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to: examine the historical development of prosperity gospel in Nigeria and its influence on religious practices and beliefs; analyze the socio-economic impact of prosperity gospel on individuals and communities in Nigeria; investigate the role of prosperity gospel in shaping the mindset and behavior of Nigerians; explore the relationship between prosperity gospel and corruption in Nigeria; assess the impact of prosperity gospel on the Nigerian economy. It is an empirical study that is laced from the Biblical viewpoint. The study is restricted to Nigeria. The study evaluated the old and New Testament biblical perspectives on prosperity.The study concluded the impact of the prosperity gospel in Nigeria is multifaceted and complex. On one hand, it has contributed to the economic growth of the country by encouraging entrepreneurship and wealth creation among its followers. The prosperity gospel, with its emphasis on financial success as a sign of God’s favor, has motivated many Nigerians to strive for economic advancement, leading to the establishment of numerous businesses and the creation of jobs. The study recommended that there is a need for a more balanced interpretation and teaching of the scriptures, particularly those related to prosperity. This would involve a comprehensive understanding of both the Old and New Testament perspectives on prosperity. The prosperity gospel should not only focus on material wealth but also on spiritual and moral prosperity. The study, therefore recommended that it is crucial to educate the general public about deliverance practice in Nigeria, its purpose, and potential risks. This can be done through public awareness campaigns, workshops, and seminars.
