ABSTRACT

The study examined the study examines impact of African philosophy in Decolonizing Foreign Culture among Nigeria Youths. The study used five objectives of the study, namely: To understand the role of African philosophy in shaping the mindset of Nigerian youths towards foreign cultures; to investigate the influence of African philosophy in promoting indigenous cultures and traditions among Nigerian youths; to assess the impact of African philosophy in reducing the dominance of foreign cultures among Nigerian youths; to explore how African philosophy has been used as a tool for decolonization among Nigerian youths; and to evaluate the effectiveness of African philosophy in fostering cultural pride and identity among Nigerian youths. The study showed that African philosophy is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been the subject of extensive scholarly debate. The philosophical ideas, values, and beliefs of African societies have been instrumental in shaping the strategies and approaches used in the fight against colonial rule. The study concluded that African philosophy has empowered Nigerian youths to reclaim their cultural heritage and to assert their African identity. The study recommended that the Nigerian education system should incorporate African philosophy into its curriculum.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

However, the extent to which African philosophy can decolonize foreign culture among Nigerian youths is unclear. This is due to the lack of comprehensive studies on the subject, as well as the difficulty in measuring cultural change.

The problem is further complicated by the fact that African philosophy itself is not a monolithic entity. There are numerous ethnic groups in Nigeria, each with its own unique philosophy and worldview (Mbiti, 1990). 1.5. Significance of the Study

1.7. Operational Definition of terms

Impact: In the context of this study, impact refers to the significant effect or influence that African philosophy has on the decolonization of foreign culture among Nigerian youths.

African Philosophy: This refers to the philosophical concepts, ideas, and thought systems that originate from the African continent. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and social and political philosophy, often intertwined with African cultural and traditional values.

Decolonizing: This term refers to the process of undoing the effects of colonialism and reclaiming and promoting indigenous cultures, traditions, languages, and knowledge systems that were suppressed or marginalized during colonial rule.

Foreign Culture: This refers to the customs, traditions, beliefs, and ways of life of people from countries or regions outside of Nigeria. In this context, it refers to cultures that have been introduced to Nigeria through colonialism or globalization and have influenced the lifestyles and mindsets of Nigerian youths.

Youths: This term generally refers to individuals who are in the stage of life between childhood and adulthood. In the context of Nigeria, the National Youth Policy defines youths as individuals between the ages of 15 and 35.
