INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Hello! Martin Heidegger, a prominent 20th-century philosopher, introduced the concept of Dasein in his seminal work “Being and Time” (1927). Dasein, a German term that can be loosely translated as “being there” or “presence,” is used by Heidegger to refer to human existence in a way that emphasizes its distinctively self-interpreting character. Heidegger’s Dasein is not just a passive entity but an active being that interprets and gives meaning to the world. Heidegger’s Dasein is a being that is “thrown” into the world and is always already in a certain mood (Heidegger, 1927).

The concept of Dasein is central to Heidegger’s existential and phenomenological project. Heidegger argues that traditional metaphysics has overlooked the question of Being because it has subordinated it to the understanding of entities. Dasein, for Heidegger, is not just another entity among entities but is the entity that questions its own being (Heidegger, 1927). This questioning leads to the understanding of the world and the self in a non-objectifying way.

The challenge of communal existence, on the other hand, is a theme that emerges from Heidegger’s later work. Heidegger suggests that Dasein is always already in-the-world with others. This “being-with” others is not just a contingent fact about Dasein but is an essential part of its being. Heidegger argues that Dasein’s understanding of itself and the world is always mediated through its relations with others (Heidegger, 1962).
