Impact of Stress on Life Span
Since stress has such a major bearing on our health and happiness, it has been the focus of a great deal of research. Stress is a normal physiological response to pressure, and while little stress may be helpful, too much stress can shorten life expectancy.
When we’re under pressure, our bodies release stress chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones get you ready for the ‘fight or flight’ reaction. However, these chemicals can be harmful when stress is long-term. Heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders like depression and anxiety are just some of the issues that can develop as a result of prolonged exposure to stress.
What’s more, stress has been shown to hasten the ageing process in humans. Telomeres, the caps at the ends of our chromosomes, have been found to shorten as a result of stress. Reduced longevity and an increased vulnerability to age-related disorders are both linked to telomere shortening.
The way we live our lives might also be affected by stress. When people are under constant pressure, they may turn to bad habits like smoking, binge drinking, eating poorly, and not getting enough exercise. These actions may also reduce one’s life expectancy.
In conclusion, chronic stress may have a major effect on our lifetime by altering both our internal biological processes and the external behaviours that we choose to engage in. In order to stay healthy and live longer, stress management is essential. Several strategies exist for doing this, including physical activity, healthy eating, sufficient rest, and conscious awareness.
