Why is Africa Exposed to Much Sunlight?

Africa’s proximity to the equator means that the continent receives a lot of sunshine. The continent is between the equator and the two equator-crossing latitudes known as the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where the sun is always above. As a result, Africa benefits from higher levels of solar radiation than locations farther from the equator.

Africa’s large geographical area and minimal cloud cover also help it get enough of sunshine. Deserts, savannas, and tropical rainforests, each with their own unique cloud patterns, may be found across the continent. More sunlight reaches the ground in places where clouds are less common.

The amount of sunshine that Africa receives is also affected by meteorological conditions and air pollution. The Harmattan, a dry and dusty trade wind, sweeps over West Africa from the Sahara Desert and is a common occurrence across the continent. Dust and sand carried by this wind have the potential to obscure the sky. On the other hand, it helps provide the hazy sunshine that characterises most of Africa throughout the summer.

There are benefits and drawbacks to Africa’s constant exposure to sunshine. On the plus side, plants use the energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis. This aids plant life and increases the continent’s already substantial biodiversity. Light from the sun is also important for maintaining stable weather patterns over Africa.

Inadequate protection from the sun can result in sunburn, heat exhaustion, and an increased risk of skin cancer. People in Africa need to take measures to protect themselves from the sun, such using sunscreen and covering up during the hottest portions of the day.

As a result of its proximity to the equator, its varied topography, climate, and pollution, Africa receives a significant amount of sunshine throughout the year. Although direct contact to sunlight is necessary for many natural processes, it is still detrimental to human health and should be avoided at all costs.
