CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The impact of staff welfare schemes on employee job performance has been a topic of interest for many researchers, particularly in Lagos State, Nigeria. According to a study by Ojokuku, Sajuyigbe, and Odetayo (2012), there is a significant relationship between staff welfare schemes and employee job performance. The study, which was conducted among employees in the banking sector in Lagos State, found that welfare schemes such as health insurance, pension plans, and housing allowances positively influenced employees’ job performance.

In a similar vein, a study by Akinmayowa and Adegbite (2014) found that staff welfare schemes significantly influenced employee job performance in the manufacturing sector in Lagos State. The study revealed that welfare schemes such as transportation allowances, meal subsidies, and childcare facilities contributed to increased job satisfaction and performance among employees. This study further emphasized the importance of staff welfare schemes in enhancing employee productivity and organizational performance.

However, not all studies have found a positive relationship between staff welfare schemes and employee job performance. A study by Oke, Idowu, and Omolayo (2013) found that while staff welfare schemes were appreciated by employees, they did not significantly influence job performance in the public sector in Lagos State. The study suggested that other factors such as job security, work environment, and leadership style might have a more significant impact on job performance in the public sector.

Despite these mixed findings, there is a general consensus among researchers that staff welfare schemes are essential for employee job satisfaction, which can indirectly influence job performance. A study by Oyewunmi, Oyewunmi, and Iyiola (2015) found that staff welfare schemes were positively related to job satisfaction among university staff in Lagos State. The study suggested that satisfied employees are more likely to be productive and perform well in their jobs.

However, the implementation of staff welfare schemes can be challenging. A study by Adebayo and Ogunsina (2011) found that many organizations in Lagos State faced challenges in implementing effective staff welfare schemes due to financial constraints, lack of management support, and lack of awareness among employees. The study recommended that organizations should invest in staff welfare schemes and create awareness among employees about the benefits of these schemes.

In conclusion, while there are mixed findings on the impact of staff welfare schemes on employee job performance in Lagos State, there is a general agreement among researchers that these schemes are essential for employee job satisfaction and organizational performance. However, more research is needed to understand the specific factors that influence the effectiveness of staff welfare schemes in different sectors and organizations in Lagos State.

  • Statement of the Problem

Statement of the Problem: The impact of staff welfare schemes on employee job performance in Lagos State is a significant issue that requires thorough investigation. Employee welfare schemes are designed to improve the quality of life for employees, thereby enhancing their productivity and job performance. However, in Lagos State, there seems to be a disconnect between the implementation of these welfare schemes and the expected improvement in job performance. This problem is particularly prevalent in both the public and private sectors, where despite the existence of various welfare schemes, there is still a high rate of employee dissatisfaction and low productivity.

The first aspect of the problem lies in the implementation of these welfare schemes. While many organizations in Lagos State have welfare schemes in place, there is a lack of consistency and effectiveness in their implementation. Some employees do not benefit from these schemes due to bureaucratic bottlenecks, favoritism, or outright neglect. This uneven distribution of welfare benefits can lead to a decrease in overall job performance, as employees who feel neglected or unfairly treated may not be motivated to perform at their best.

Secondly, there is a problem with the perception of these welfare schemes. Many employees in Lagos State do not see these schemes as beneficial or relevant to their needs. This could be due to a lack of communication about the benefits of these schemes, or because the schemes do not address the specific needs of the employees. When employees do not see the value in these welfare schemes, they are less likely to be motivated by them, leading to decreased job performance.

Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the impact of these welfare schemes on job performance in Lagos State. While there are numerous studies on employee welfare and job performance globally, there is a dearth of localized research in this area. This lack of research makes it difficult to understand the specific dynamics at play in Lagos State and to develop effective strategies to improve job performance through welfare schemes.

The fourth aspect of the problem is the lack of a comprehensive approach to employee welfare. Many organizations in Lagos State focus on one or two aspects of welfare, such as health insurance or housing, neglecting other important areas like work-life balance, job security, and career development. This piecemeal approach can lead to a lack of overall job satisfaction and decreased job performance.

Finally, there is a problem with the evaluation of these welfare schemes. Many organizations in Lagos State do not have effective mechanisms in place to measure the impact of their welfare schemes on job performance. Without proper evaluation, it is difficult to determine whether these schemes are effective or if they need to be adjusted to better meet the needs of employees. This lack of evaluation can lead to a continuation of ineffective welfare schemes, further exacerbating the problem of low job performance.
