CHAPTER ONE
- Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Concrete is a versatile material for building construction work. It has many advantages properties such as a good compressive strength, durability, specific gravity and fire resistance.
However, it also has some properties like low tensile strength, brittleness, lower impact strength, heavy weight etc.
Concrete is better option than any other available material for building construction. Some of the properties may be enhanced by adding clay with other ingredient of the concrete. The inclusion in concrete act as unwanted micro crack arrested in presence of clay. The cracks prorogation is the lead which helps in improving in static and dynamic properties of concrete.
Today, pozzolan and cementitous material place an important role in concrete. Waste of industries and constructions which have pozzolanic or cementitous property, not only can reduce environmental pollution and energy consumption of construction industry but also mark it cheap. There are proven record that shown partial replacement of cement with pozzolanic material up to 20%-30% can reduce almost equivalent as conventional concrete.
The most promising option to lower costs (and environmental impact) is to bind conventional Portland cement with pozzolanic material deposits or can be obtained as by products in agro- industrial.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Concrete product are characterized with problems of wear and tear when subjected to its usage. This becomes a great challenged when the product is exposed to moving load, wind, erosion and running water. The volume of the concrete gradually reduce in size and the surface becomes rough and unattractive. Therefore to overcome this problem there is the need for the introduction of some pozzolanic materials that will help overcome this issue. The common material among such pozzolanos is the LCPWP.
Partial replacement of cement with LCPWP will also reduce.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The aim of this project is to access the strength and abrasion resistance of concrete containing local clay pot waste powder as partial replacement of cement.
1.4 Objectives of the study
Objective of this research:
- To determine the effect of local clay pot waste powder on fresh properties of concrete.
- To determine the abrasion resistance of concrete containing local clay pot waste powder.
1.4 Scope and Limitations
Scope of this work is mainly to evaluate the abrasion resistance of concrete containing local clay pot waste powder. Two types of test will be carried out in this study. That is, wire brush test and los-Angeles machine test.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The significance of this practical work is to be able to determine what to be recommended after passing through the various tests of abrasion for a good selection of the percentage values.
