• Background to the Study

This relationship is often attributed to the resources and opportunities that higher SES families can provide, such as access to better schools, educational materials, and extracurricular activities.

Parental education is another critical factor influencing student achievement. Research by Davis-Kean (2005) suggests that parents with higher educational attainment are more likely to engage in activities that promote cognitive development and academic success in their children. These parents are often more involved in their children’s education, providing homework assistance, fostering a learning-friendly environment at home, and setting higher academic expectations. The aim of the study is to examine the Influence of Social Background of Parents on the Academic Performance of Students. The specific objectives of the study are:

3. To investigate the impact of parental involvement in education on the academic success of students.

1.6. Significance of the Study

The study of the influence of parents’ social background on the academic performance of students is significant for several reasons. The study examines the Influence of Social Background of Parents on the Academic Performance of Students. The study is limited to selected high Schools in Accra, Ghana.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Influence: Influence refers to the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. In the context of your study, it pertains to how the social background of parents can affect the academic performance of students.

Social Background: Social background encompasses the various socio-economic factors that characterize the environment in which a person is raised. This includes elements such as family income, education level of parents, occupation, cultural practices, and social status. These factors collectively shape an individual’s opportunities, behaviors, and perspectives.

Parents: Parents are the caregivers and guardians who are responsible for raising and nurturing children. They play a crucial role in the development of their children, providing not only basic needs like food and shelter but also emotional support, education, and guidance.

Academic Performance: Academic performance refers to how well a student is accomplishing their educational goals. This can be measured through grades, test scores, class participation, and other indicators of learning and understanding. It reflects a student’s ability to understand and apply knowledge and skills in an educational setting.

Students: Students are individuals who are enrolled in an educational institution for the purpose of learning. They engage in various academic activities, such as attending classes, completing assignments, and taking exams, to acquire knowledge and skills in different subjects
