CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study
The internet has changed the way that kids get information for school greatly. Kids nowadays have a plethora of resources at their disposal thanks to the proliferation of internet resources and instructional websites. Smith (2018) argues that there are several benefits to getting an education online, including the flexibility to study whatever interests you. The possible downsides, however, should not be overlooked.
Internet-based learning has several benefits, one of which is its adaptability. Now more than ever, kids have convenient, anytime, anywhere access to the world’s knowledge. Having this kind of leeway is especially helpful for kids who have special needs or who live in rural regions (Johnson, 2019). The interactive learning tools and multimedia materials available on many online platforms also contribute to students’ increased involvement and comprehension (Brown, 2020).
However, there are also some drawbacks to introducing kids to online learning. The absence of adult supervision and the possibility of being exposed to unsuitable material is a big cause for worry. It’s difficult for parents and teachers to monitor and filter material efficiently due to the sheer volume of information accessible online (Jones, 2017). In addition, studies have shown that kids who spend too much time in front of screens might develop health problems including tired eyes and a lack of social skills (Smith, 2019).
One possible drawback of online learning is the risk of information overload. There is so much information out there that kids may have trouble identifying good sources from bad ones (Johnson, 2020). This may be detrimental to learning how to think critically and do independent research. There is also concern that students would place less value on learning strategies like reading books and having in-person talks as they become more reliant on online education (Brown, 2018).
Despite these downsides, online schooling also provides unique chances for students to gain crucial digital literacy skills. Skills in using and navigating digital environments are essential for success in the modern world (Jones, 2020). Learning over the Internet may help kids develop skills like critical thinking and problem solving that are essential in the contemporary workplace.
Children’s access to online learning has far-reaching consequences. While it has benefits like portability and accessibility, others worry about issues including lack of oversight, inappropriate material, and information overload. Parents, teachers, and legislators must find a middle ground between maximising online learning’s advantages and minimising any negative effects it may have on students. The pros and cons of online learning for kids require further study so that we can find the best methods to exploit the pros and mitigate the cons.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
Numerous shifts have occurred in the classroom as a result of technology’s fast development. The widespread use of online learning platforms is one such development. There are benefits to this method of learning, but there are also some drawbacks to consider. This issue statement is an attempt to think through some of the drawbacks associated with educating children online.
The loss of face-to-face contact is a major drawback of online learning for kids. In a conventional classroom, students and instructors are in constant visual contact with one another throughout the school day. However, children’s online education frequently removes them from such relationships, which may diminish their social skills and capacity to cooperate successfully.
Another big downside of exposing children to internet education is the poor oversight and control over their online activity. While there is a wealth of information available online, there are also dangers that children should be aware of, such as cyberbullying and the presence of predators. The safety and well-being of children is at risk if they are exposed to these threats without adult supervision.
One difficulty with using the internet for learning is that it might be difficult to keep children’s attention. Because of the abundance of resources accessible online, it’s simple for kids to become sidetracked from their studies and start doing something completely different. Their academic progress and general performance may suffer as a result of this lack of concentration.
Lastly, it’s possible that children’s key abilities won’t be developed to their full potential via online learning. Teaching strategies that encourage students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and work together are commonly emphasised in conventional classrooms. While these abilities are crucial for success in life, they may not be fully developed via internet education due to its potential reliance on passive learning through videos and online lectures.
