INTRODUCTION

  • Introduction

DHL is one of the biggest names in courier business. It has branches all over the nation. The company conveys goods to all parts of the world. DHL guarantees speed and safety. DHL has stand-by security dogs in the offices which detects contraband goods.

This project work is aimed at computerizing the entire Courier System that will aid in the planning and control of parcels as well as reduce the overall cost due to lost luggage. The new courier information system also has ultimate objectives to be achieved and some of the technical terms associated with it which will make the new system more useful and reliable than the former system.

1.1         Statement Of The Problem

Courier business introduces the surest and fastest means of sending peoples luggage’s within and across the countries. It makes home, friends and relations near from afar. All over the years modes of luggage conveyance has been through the sea only. This entails more time wastage for the goods to get to its destination.

Not only that, it consumes time; many a times the luggage involved is tampered with by unauthorized persons. Before goods get to their destination, they will not be sound and complete again due to these constraints. These posses a high risk to the perishable goods to be transferred.

With the current technology awareness people introduce the courier business to support the use of the airline to convey goods to their destination as quick as possible. With this, goods can get to their destination the same day or worst within three days.

Adequate security measures were taken also to make sure that contraband goods or exhibit in any form are not conveyed through this modernized system.

DHL is one of the biggest names in courier business. It has branches all over the nation. The company conveys goods to all parts of the world. DHL guarantees speed and safety. DHL has stand-by security dogs in the offices which detects contraband goods

.

Normally goods are registered with any of the DHL office nearest to you. The registered goods are accompanied with the information about the goods to its destination.

The goods are registered unsealed; this is to enable the staff to properly check the contents to make sure that it does not contain any contraband goods. After registrations, a receipt conveying the description of the goods and travel information is issued to the customers.

Adequately information about every good to be delivered or that has been delivered is maintained by the company for proper delivery and future references respectively

For effective information storage and retrieval, the computer is the best system to implement courier services. With the use of computer in courier information system, accurate, reliable and comprehensive records are taken and timely information are also generated. It is equally cost effective.

The main problem associated with the old manual system is delay. It wastes a lot of time. This delay is as result of the type of storage system device in place which is very poor. It does not make for easy retrieval and update of information. It makes the work very difficult.

The system increases much expense. It is very expensive to maintain.

It involves many staff and the costs of stencils are much.

1.2          Purpose Of The Study

The main purpose of the study is to certify the importance of computers in couriers business. It exposes the student to area of application concerning courier information system.

1.4        Scope Of The Study

This project work analyses the data enter, processing and output operations.

The system receives data, processes the data and generates the required result. The case study is DHL, Owerri.

1.5        Limitation Of The Study

This project could not go beyond this level due to the time constraints accrued in the process of data collection, writing and debugging of the program attached to this work.

Another constraint is the attitude of some staff of DHL in accordance with maintaining their duty of secrecy. This made collection of data difficult.

In 1969, just months after the world had marveled at Neil Armstrong’s step on the moon for the first time, these three partners took another step that would have profound impact on the way the world does business.

The founder began to personally ship papers from San Francisco to Honolulu, beginning customers’ clearance of the ship’s cargo before the actual arrival of the ship and dramatically reducing time in the harbor.

In 1988, DHL was already one of world best Courier Information Service Company with branches in 170 countries including Nigeria.

At the beginning of 2007, Deutsche post world Net became the major share holder in DHL, by the end of the same year, DHL was 100% owned by deutsche post World Net.

In 2003, Deutsche post world Net consolidated all of its express and logistics activities into one single brand. The DHL brand was further strengthened by the Deutsche post WorldNet acquisition of Excel in December 2005.
