CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                      INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The country is blessed with luxuriant vegetation, abundant network of rivers, crude oil, wells, in different location and to cap it all, sufficient human resources to manage these natural endowment.

Unfortunately, with all these, the country is yet to attain the “National food security level”. This is seen in the inadequate supply of domestically produced food for the vast majority of Nigeria at all times, due to low performance. To reverse this trend, and to guarantee adequate supply of stable food items, the establishment of food manufacturing industries is a necessity.

This problem is particularly serious at this time when we are faced with scarcity of resources. This there is need for increased labor efficiency of companies to be saved from stagnation and attain substantial returns on investment.

The food industry too is not left out of the problem of low performance. The problem is not only caused by the presence of scarce resources and Nigeria works failure to put in their best, because they are not well motivated.

Our educational institutions have to align themselves with business community to find out where the Nigerian worker is, what motivates him and under what condition he can contribute his best effort towards the achievement of the corporate objectives.

Motivation is a function which the management of the organization performs in order to get employees contribute effectively to the achievement of organizational goals and hence, the employee (labor, which contribute an indispensable factor of production) have urges, aspiration, needs and desires and they have to be given priority in terms of these, which have to be harnessed and channeled towards a smooth, constructive and corporate behavior.

For Nigeria to move towards a genuine development measurement must be taken to achieve a high level of productivity consciousness, not in the food manufacturing industries but in other sectors of the economy.

To be successful, a nation productivity drive should enjoy the whole-heated cooperation and support of worker, the employers and the government.

1.2      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One problem that is being encountered within any organization is how to get the number of employee of such organization to work willingly, enthusiastically, and to produce to the maximum extent of their capacity. The problem of motivation is universal since it affects both the developed and under developed countries.

Workers do not perform as expected in order to achieve the corporate goals, whereas the organization goes to great extent in satisfying the individual via payment of salaries and providing other fringe benefits.

However, organization believe that the payment of salaries is just not enough to gear employees to work but there are other non-monetary rewards, employees required for maximum performance.

The problem of this study therefore, is to determine the effect of motivation on employee’s performance in a food industry with particular to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.

This approach will help in enlightening the worker to improving efficiency and performance, which will bring about innovation and in turn deserve reward. Workers need to be satisfied because their roles cannot be overemphasized.

Basically, organization cannot survive in isolation without the support of men to convert its money, material and machine to goods and services. Based on these, the concept f motivation should be understood to solve the problems involved in administering workers so as to gain their optimum support.
