INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christian ethics is a theological discipline that seeks to articulate and apply moral principles derived from the life, teachings, and person of Jesus Christ. It involves critical reflection on how Christians are to live in obedience to God’s will, guided by Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. Christian ethics is not abstract speculation but a call to embody divine values such as love, justice, mercy, and truth in the realities of daily life. At its core, Christian ethics addresses how the Christian faith informs human behavior and decision-making, particularly in a world marked by moral ambiguity and brokenness.

A fundamental concern within Christian ethics is the pervasive problem of sin. In Christian theology, sin is not merely a list of wrong actions but a condition of the human heart that leads to moral failure and estrangement from God. Romans 3:23 affirms that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” highlighting the universal nature of sin. This moral distortion impairs human judgment, undermines relationships, and makes the pursuit of goodness and virtue more difficult. Consequently, Christian ethics must reckon with the reality of sin as it seeks to chart a path toward moral renewal and faithful living.

The biblical narrative provides a foundational understanding of sin and its consequences. In the Genesis account, sin enters human history through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, resulting in alienation from God, internal guilt, broken human relationships, and the eventual corruption of creation itself (Genesis 3:1–19). This narrative underscores the seriousness of moral rebellion and sets the stage for the need for redemption. Christian ethics, therefore, is deeply tied to the doctrines of the Fall and Redemption—it not only identifies the problem of sin but also proclaims the hope of restoration through the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Christian ethics offers more than rules or behavioral codes; it is ultimately about transformation. According to Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1955), ethics must be grounded in the reality of Christ, who redeems humanity from sin and calls believers into a new way of life. Yet, Christian ethics does not leave humanity in despair; it proclaims the possibility of new life through the redemptive work of Christ. By confronting sin honestly and pointing toward redemption, Christian ethics provides a comprehensive moral vision that is both realistic and hopeful. This study, therefore, explores how Christian ethics can respond meaningfully to the enduring problem of sin in personal and public life.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread dissemination of Christian ethical teachings across the world, including in regions with strong Christian influence, there remains a disturbing disconnect between moral instruction and ethical behavior. The persistence of sin—manifesting in acts of dishonesty, corruption, sexual immorality, violence, and social injustice—even among professing Christians, highlights a profound moral crisis. It raises urgent questions about the practical impact of Christian ethics in everyday life. If Christian ethics aims to guide human behavior toward righteousness, why does moral failure remain so prevalent among its adherents? This paradox challenges both the credibility and the application of Christian moral teachings in personal and communal contexts.

The gap between ethical knowledge and moral action is a central concern. Many individuals within the Church are well-versed in biblical doctrines and moral standards, yet these do not consistently translate into ethical conduct. This suggests that mere instruction or intellectual assent is insufficient to overcome the power of sin. It indicates the need for a deeper integration of ethics with spiritual formation, character development, and transformative discipleship. Unless Christian ethics is internalized and empowered by the Holy Spirit, it may remain an abstract ideal rather than a lived reality. The question, then, is how Christian ethics can move beyond theory into practice in a way that effectively combats sin and fosters holiness.

Compounding this problem is the influence of contemporary cultural trends that undermine traditional Christian moral values. Secular ideologies often promote relativism—the belief that moral truths are subjective and individually determined. In such an environment, the concept of sin as an objective violation of God’s moral order is increasingly viewed as outdated or oppressive. Personal autonomy is often prioritized over divine authority, leading many to reject absolute moral standards. This cultural shift creates tension for Christians who seek to uphold biblical ethics in a society that questions the very existence of moral absolutes.

Moreover, the marginalization of the concept of sin has weakened the Church’s prophetic voice in matters of public ethics. When sin is trivialized or redefined, the urgency of repentance and the need for redemption are diminished. This has serious implications for both personal accountability and societal transformation. Christian ethics cannot be effective unless it clearly identifies sin and offers a redemptive path forward. Without a robust doctrine of sin, Christian ethical teachings risk becoming diluted, losing their transformative power and their relevance in addressing the deep moral issues of our time.

In light of these challenges, there is a critical need to reexamine and reimagine the role of Christian ethics in confronting sin in all its forms. How can Christian ethical frameworks be revitalized to speak powerfully into contemporary moral crises? What role does the Church play in modeling ethical integrity in the face of societal corruption and individual compromise? And how can believers be equipped not just to know what is right, but to live it out consistently? These questions form the heart of the problem this study seeks to address, aiming to contribute to the renewal of Christian moral witness in a fallen world.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of this study is to explore the nature and role of Christian ethics in addressing the problem of sin. It aims to:

1. Examine the theological and biblical foundations of Christian ethics.
2. Analyze the concept of sin and its moral implications from a Christian perspective.
3. Investigate the relationship between sin and ethical failure in contemporary society.
4. Suggest pathways for moral renewal and transformation based on Christian ethical principles.

1.4 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1.5 Significance of the Study

This involves not only preaching against sin but also modeling a redemptive lifestyle that reflects the character of Christ in all areas of life—personal, familial, communal, and societal.

Beyond ecclesiastical boundaries, the relevance of this study extends to broader societal conversations about ethics, justice, and human behavior. In an era marked by corruption in governance, inequality in economic systems, and moral failures in influential institutions, a clear and coherent ethical vision is needed. Christian ethics, when properly understood and practiced, offers a countercultural voice that advocates for truth, accountability, compassion, and restoration. This study positions Christian ethics as a valuable moral compass for a society adrift in relativism and moral confusion.

Furthermore, the study contributes to ongoing discussions on personal transformation and spiritual growth. This internal transformation is the foundation for external ethical behavior. Thus, the study affirms that genuine Christian ethics begins in the heart and is sustained by the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, leading to lives that reflect divine holiness and love.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The study engaged representation across different groups—clergy, students, and laity in Ikorodu, Lagos This study is focused primarily on Christian theological and ethical perspectives concerning sin. While it may draw on insights from other moral philosophies for comparative purposes, the central framework will be biblical and theological. The study will also engage both historical and contemporary sources to show continuity and development in Christian ethical thought. The application of Christian ethics to issues such as personal morality, community life, and public justice will be explored, especially in light of the pervasive influence of sin.

1.7 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement is buttressed below:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between knowledge of Christian ethics and ethical behavior among Christians.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Christian Ethics: Christian ethics refers to the system of moral principles and practices that are grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the broader Christian tradition. It draws heavily from Scripture, particularly the life and words of Christ, and seeks to guide believers in living righteously in accordance with God’s will. Christian ethics encompasses issues of personal conduct, social justice, and communal life, emphasizing love, mercy, justice, humility, and holiness. It serves not merely as a moral code but as a transformative way of life rooted in the imitation of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Sin: Sin is understood in Christian theology as both an act and a condition. As an act, it represents a conscious transgression against divine law—doing what God forbids or failing to do what He commands. As a condition, sin refers to the fallen state of human nature characterized by moral corruption, spiritual blindness, and alienation from God. It is a pervasive force that distorts human relationships, disrupts moral reasoning, and undermines the pursuit of virtue. Sin is not just a personal failure but a cosmic disorder that necessitates divine intervention for restoration and healing.

Moral Decision-Making: Moral decision-making is the reflective process through which individuals discern right from wrong based on ethical principles, personal conscience, and, in Christian ethics, the guidance of Scripture and the Holy Spirit. It involves evaluating actions and intentions within the framework of God’s revealed will and seeking to act in ways that honor Him and benefit others. In the Christian context, moral decision-making is not only about making ethical choices but also about cultivating a heart aligned with God’s purposes, shaped by prayer, community, and spiritual discipline.

Redemption: Redemption in Christian theology refers to God’s gracious act of delivering humanity from the bondage of sin and its consequences through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is both a historical event and a continuing reality that transforms lives. Redemption restores broken relationships between God and humanity, grants forgiveness, and empowers believers to live ethically and righteously. It is central to Christian ethics, as it not only removes the guilt of sin but also initiates a process of moral and spiritual renewal aimed at conforming believers to the image of Christ.

Virtue Ethics: Virtue ethics is a philosophical and theological approach to ethics that emphasizes the development of moral character rather than merely the observance of rules or the consequences of actions. In the Christian tradition, virtue ethics focuses on cultivating Christ-like attributes such as humility, patience, faithfulness, love, and courage. It proposes that moral behavior flows naturally from a virtuous character formed through spiritual discipline, community life, and the work of the Holy Spirit. This approach aligns closely with biblical teachings that stress internal transformation as the basis for ethical conduct.
