CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The trend of health information management students’ performance in national licenses examination has been a topic of interest in recent years. Health Information Management (HIM) is a rapidly growing field, with an increasing number of students pursuing this career path. The performance of these students in national licensing examinations is crucial as it determines their readiness to enter the professional field (Smith & Jones, 2018).

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is buttressed below:

Ho:  Health information management has no significant impact on students’ performance in national licenses examination.

H₁:  Health information management has significant impact on students’ performance in national licenses examination

• Significance of the Study

The study of the trend of health information management students’ performance in national licenses examination is of great significance as it provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state of education in this field. The study examines the trend of health information management students’ performance in national licenses examination. The study is restricted to students’ participation in licensing exam from Lagos State.

• Operational Definition of Terms

1. Trend: A general direction in which something is developing or changing. In this context, it refers to the pattern or trajectory of health information management students’ performance over time.
2. Health: A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In the context of your study, it refers to the field of study or industry that is concerned with maintaining or improving health, often through the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
3. Information Management: The process of collecting, storing, managing and maintaining information in all its forms. In the context of health, it refers to the practice of managing health-related information.
4. Student: A person who is studying at a school or college. In this context, it refers to individuals who are studying health information management.
5. Performance: The action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function. In this context, it refers to how well the students are doing in their national licenses examination.
6. National License’s Examination: A standardized test that is often required for licensure in a particular profession at the national level. In this context, it refers to the examination that health information management students must pass to become licensed professionals in their field.
