INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Women have historically played an instrumental role in the life of the church, yet their contributions to church growth, particularly through women’s ministry, have not always been fully explored in academic literature. Women’s ministries are structured programs within religious communities that cater specifically to the spiritual, social, and emotional needs of women. These ministries have the potential to serve as a powerful force for church growth, especially when considering their focus on community-building, discipleship, and leadership development (Brock & Walthall, 2015). By creating spaces for women to grow in their faith, exercise leadership, and foster relationships, women’s ministries not only contribute to individual spiritual growth but can also directly impact the expansion of church communities. As churches seek to grow and thrive, understanding the relationship between women’s ministries and church growth is essential to their overall success.

Women’s ministries are often seen as a catalyst for both internal church growth and outreach. According to researchers, women’s groups can significantly enhance church attendance and involvement by creating a welcoming and supportive environment (Vaughan & Johnson, 2017). These ministries frequently offer a variety of activities such as Bible studies, prayer meetings, and community service projects that attract women and their families to the church. The relational aspect of women’s ministries fosters a sense of belonging, which is particularly important in a society where social isolation is on the rise (O’Neill, 2016). The church, through its women’s ministry, can provide a counterbalance to the disconnection many experience outside the faith community, thereby contributing to sustained attendance and membership.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

The role of women in the growth and development of religious institutions has gained increasing attention in recent years, particularly with regard to women’s ministries in the Church. However, there remains a gap in comprehensive understanding of the specific impact that women’s ministries have on church growth, particularly in the context of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. While women have historically played vital roles in the church, their contributions are often underestimated or overlooked when it comes to strategic planning for church growth and expansion. This study seeks to address the problem of underappreciation and under-research of women’s ministries in the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, with an emphasis on how these ministries contribute to numerical and spiritual growth within the church.

Despite the growing recognition of women’s roles in church life, there is still insufficient scholarly attention on how women’s ministries, as distinct entities, affect the overall growth of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. While it is widely acknowledged that women are active participants in various church activities, including leadership roles, outreach, and social programs, there is a lack of empirical research that quantifies and qualifies their specific contributions to church growth. Church growth, particularly in the Nigerian context, is influenced by numerous factors, including evangelism, discipleship, leadership development, and community engagement, yet the unique influence of women’s ministries within these areas remains inadequately explored.

The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, as one of the largest Christian denominations in the country, has seen significant growth over the past few decades. However, while the church’s membership has increased, this growth has not always translated into spiritual maturity, community engagement, or sustainable long-term impact. Women’s ministries, often seen as auxiliary or secondary to male-dominated leadership structures, may have untapped potential for addressing these challenges. In conclusion, the problem that this study seeks to address is the lack of comprehensive understanding of how women’s ministries within the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion impact overall church growth. Despite women’s significant involvement in church activities, there remains insufficient research into their specific contributions to both spiritual and numerical growth. This study will examine the influence of women’s ministries on church vitality, explore the structural and cultural barriers to their full integration, and propose ways to harness their potential for promoting sustainable and holistic church growth within the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Women Ministry and Its Impact on church growth. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine the role of women in ministry within the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Women’s ministries often focus on areas such as Bible study, prayer meetings, fellowship, mentoring, and outreach. These ministries empower women to serve within the church and beyond, building a community of support, discipleship, and service among women of all ages.

Impact: Impact refers to the significant effect or influence that something has on a particular outcome or situation. In the context of women’s ministry, impact refers to the ways in which these ministries contribute to various aspects of church life, such as spiritual growth, community engagement, social outreach, and church expansion. The impact of women’s ministries can be seen in increased church attendance, the deepening of personal faith, the strengthening of church leadership, and the church’s greater involvement in social issues.
