CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Religious centers, particularly churches and mosques, have been identified as significant contributors to noise pollution in Port Harcourt City Local Government. This is primarily due to the use of loudspeakers and public address systems during worship services, prayer sessions, and other religious activities (Adeyemi, 2018). The noise generated from these activities often exceeds the permissible noise levels set by the World Health Organization, thereby causing discomfort to residents in the vicinity of these religious centers (Adeyemi, 2018).

The impact of noise pollution from religious centers in Port Harcourt City Local Government is multifaceted. Moreover, the rapid urbanization and population growth in Port Harcourt City have led to an increase in the number of religious centers in residential areas. This proximity to residential areas further intensifies the noise pollution problem, as the noise from these centers directly affects the residents (Oyedepo, 2012).

The health implications of this problem cannot be overstated. Numerous studies have linked noise pollution to various health issues, including sleep disturbances, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive impairment in children (Basner et al., 2014). Therefore, the noise pollution problem in Port Harcourt City poses a significant public health risk.

Furthermore, the noise pollution problem also has social implications. The constant noise from religious centers often leads to conflicts between the centers and the surrounding residents, disrupting the social harmony in the community (Adeyemi, 2017).

3. To assess the awareness level of religious centers on the issue of noise pollution in Port Harcourt City Local Government.
4. To evaluate the existing policies and regulations regarding noise pollution in religious centers.

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What is the extent of noise pollution caused by religious centers in Port Harcourt City Local Government?
2. What is the impact of noise pollution from religious centers on the residents of Port Harcourt City Local Government?
3. How aware are the religious centers of the issue of noise pollution in Port Harcourt City Local Government?
4. What are the existing policies and regulations regarding noise pollution in religious centers in Port Harcourt City Local Government?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Noise pollution from religious centers has no significant impact on the residents of Port Harcourt City.

H₁: Noise pollution from religious centers has significant impact on the residents of Port Harcourt City.

• Significance of the study

The significance of studying noise pollution caused by religious centers in Port Harcourt City Local Government is multi-faceted. Firstly, it contributes to the broader understanding of environmental pollution, specifically noise pollution, and its sources. • Scope of the Study

The study examines religious centers and noise pollution in Port Harcourt City Local Government. The study is limited to the residents of Port Harcourt City Local Government.

• Operational Definition of Terms

Religious Centers: These are places where people gather for religious activities. They include buildings like churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, and other structures designated for worship or religious gatherings.

Noise Pollution: This refers to the harmful level of noises produced by human activities that disrupt the standard of living in the affected area. It is an environmental issue that adversely affects the mental and physical health of living beings. Noise pollution can come from various sources, including industrial activities, traffic, public gatherings, and in this context, religious centers.

Resident: A resident refers to a person who lives somewhere permanently or on a long-term basis. In the context of this study, residents are the people living in Port Harcourt City Local Government, who are potentially affected by the noise pollution from religious centers.

City: A city is a large human settlement. It can be characterized by its significant population density and vast human features in comparison to areas surrounding it. In this context, the city refers to Port Harcourt City, a local government area in Nigeria.
