CHAPTER ONE

INTROUCTION

• Background to the Study

The supply chain is a critical component of any organization’s operations, and its management can significantly impact the organization’s sustainability goals. In Nigeria, several measures have been implemented by organizations to enhance their supply chain sustainability. For instance, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has adopted a comprehensive sustainability strategy that includes measures such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy efficiency, and minimizing waste (NNPC, 2020).

Moreover, the Nigerian Breweries Plc has also implemented a robust supply chain management system that focuses on reducing environmental impact. The company has adopted measures such as water recycling, energy efficiency, and waste management to enhance its supply chain sustainability (Nigerian Breweries Plc, 2019). These measures have not only helped the company reduce its environmental footprint but also improved its operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

In addition, the Dangote Group, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, has also taken significant steps to enhance its supply chain sustainability. The company has implemented measures such as the use of renewable energy sources, waste reduction, and the promotion of local sourcing to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainability (Dangote Group, 2020).

However, despite these efforts, there are still significant challenges to achieving supply chain sustainability in Nigeria. These include infrastructural deficiencies, regulatory inconsistencies, and a lack of awareness and understanding of sustainability issues among businesses (Adeleye & Ebohon, 2018).

To overcome these challenges, it is recommended that organizations in Nigeria adopt a holistic approach to supply chain management that includes not only environmental considerations but also social and economic aspects. This could involve measures such as promoting fair trade, improving working conditions, and enhancing local community development (Amaeshi, Adegbite, & Rajwani, 2016).

Furthermore, while significant strides have been made in enhancing supply chain sustainability in Nigeria, there is still much work to be done. Organizations need to continue to innovate and adopt best practices to achieve their sustainability goals.

• Statement of the Problem

The problem of achieving sustainability goals in Nigeria through supply chain measures is a complex one. The country, like many others in the developing world, faces significant challenges in terms of infrastructure, governance, and economic stability, all of which can impact the effectiveness of supply chain management (Adeleye & Eboh, 2012).

One of the main issues is the lack of a comprehensive and integrated approach to supply chain management. Many organizations in Nigeria still operate in silos, with little coordination or collaboration between different departments or units. This lack of integration can lead to inefficiencies and waste, undermining sustainability efforts (Oke, Idiagbon-Oke, & Ajiboye, 2016).

Another problem is the lack of awareness and understanding of sustainability concepts among key stakeholders in the supply chain. Many businesses in Nigeria are primarily focused on short-term profits, with little regard for the long-term environmental and social impacts of their operations (Adeleye & Eboh, 2012). This mindset can hinder the adoption of sustainable supply chain practices.

Furthermore, there is a lack of adequate regulatory frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to promote and ensure sustainable supply chain practices. While Nigeria has made some progress in this area, much more needs to be done to create an enabling environment for sustainability (Oke, Idiagbon-Oke, & Ajiboye, 2016).

The lack of access to finance and technology is another major barrier. Many organizations in Nigeria lack the resources to invest in advanced supply chain technologies or to implement innovative sustainability initiatives. This is compounded by the high cost of doing business in the country, which can further discourage investment in sustainability (Adeleye & Eboh, 2012).

Finally, the issue of corruption cannot be overlooked. Corruption can distort the supply chain, leading to inefficiencies and waste. It can also undermine efforts to promote sustainability, as it can lead to the misallocation of resources and the violation of environmental and social standards (Oke, Idiagbon-Oke, & Ajiboye, 2016).

• Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to evaluate the supply chain measures for organization achievement on sustainability goals in Nigeria.

1. To assess the supply chain measures in Nigerian organizations and their alignment with sustainability goals.
2. To find out challenges faced by Nigerian organizations in implementing sustainable supply chain measures.
3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing supply chain measures in achieving sustainability goals in Nigerian organizations.
4. To find out the effectiveness of supply chain measures towards achieving sustainability goals.

• Research Questions

The research questions are stated below:

1. How are the supply chain measures in Nigerian organizations aligned with sustainability goals?
2. What are the challenges faced by Nigerian organizations in implementing sustainable supply chain measures?
3. How effective are the existing supply chain measures in achieving sustainability goals in Nigerian organizations?
4. How effective are supply chain measures towards achieving sustainability goals in Nigerian organizations?

• Research Hypothesis

The research hypothesis is buttressed below:

Ho: Supply chain measures has no significant impact on Nigerian organizations and their alignment with sustainability goals

H₁: Supply chain measures has significant impact on Nigerian organizations and their alignment with sustainability goals

• Significance of the Study

The significance of studying the supply chain measures for an organization to achieve sustainability goals in Nigeria is multi-faceted. Nigeria, being one of the largest economies in Africa, has a significant role to play in the global sustainability agenda. The supply chain, which is the backbone of any organization, can be a powerful tool in achieving sustainability goals. • Scope of the Study

The study evaluates the supply chain measures for organization achievement on sustainability goals in Nigeria. The study focuses on Dangote Flour Mill, Apapa, Lagos.

• Operational Definition of Terms

1. Supply Chain: This refers to the network of all the individuals, organizations, resources, activities, and technology involved in the creation and sale of a product, from the delivery of source materials from the supplier to the manufacturer, through to its eventual delivery to the end user. It involves steps such as production, processing, distribution, and sales.
2. Measures: In a business context, measures often refer to the quantifiable data used to track and assess the status of a specific business process. It’s a way of monitoring and assessing the success of a business or project.
3. Organization: An organization is a group of people who work together in an organized way for a shared purpose. This could be a business, a non-profit entity, a government agency, or any other type of group.
4. Sustainability Goals: These are objectives set by an entity (like a company or government) to maintain the ability to continue its activities indefinitely, while avoiding the depletion of natural resources and causing minimal impact on the environment. These goals can be related to various aspects like reducing carbon footprint, recycling waste, improving energy efficiency, etc.
