CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria has been a subject of interest in recent years. According to Ogunniyi (2015), the integration of technology in sports education has significantly improved the performance of students in various sports activities. The authors argue that technology provides a platform for students to learn and understand the dynamics of different sports, thereby enhancing their performance. For instance, video analysis software allows students to analyze their performance and identify areas that need improvement.

• Statement of the Problem

The problem of enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria is a significant one. Despite the country’s rich sporting history and potential, many secondary school students are not reaching their full potential due to a lack of access to and understanding of modern technology that could enhance their performance (Adeyanju, 2017).

Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the impact of technology on sports performance in Nigerian secondary schools. Most studies have focused on developed countries, leaving a gap in the literature on developing countries like Nigeria (Adeyanju, 2017). This lack of research makes it difficult to understand the specific needs and challenges of Nigerian students and to develop effective interventions.

The problem is further compounded by the fact that many teachers and coaches in Nigerian secondary schools are not adequately trained to use technology in sports. This lack of training can lead to a lack of confidence in using technology, which in turn can hinder its adoption (Ojo, 2020).

The role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires further research. Addressing this problem could have significant implications for the development of sports in Nigeria and for the health and well-being of Nigerian students.

• Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Kwara State. The specific objectives of the study are:

1. To examine the use of technology in sports training and performance among secondary school students.
2. To identify the specific types of technology that have proven effective in enhancing sport performance.
3. To find out the barriers to effective use of technology in sports training among secondary school students.
4. To find out strategies for integrating effective technological tools into sports training and performance for secondary school.

 Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. How is technology being utilized in sports training and performance among secondary school students in Nigeria?
2. What specific types of technology have proven effective in enhancing sport performance among these students?
3. What are the barriers to effective use of technology in sports training among secondary school students in Nigeria?
4. What strategies can be implemented for integrating effective technological tools into sports training and performance for secondary school students in Nigeria?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is buttressed below:

H_o: Technology has no significant impact in sports training and performance among secondary school students.

H₁: Technology has significant impact in sports training and performance among secondary school students.

 Significance of the Study

The significance of the study on the role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria is multi-faceted. Firstly, it provides an understanding of how technology can be utilized to improve physical education and sports programs in schools. This includes the use of advanced equipment for training, performance tracking systems, and digital platforms for learning and collaboration. The study also highlights the potential of technology in identifying and nurturing sporting talents from a young age, which can contribute to the development of sports in Nigeria.

Secondly, the study underscores the importance of integrating technology into the education system, particularly in the field of sports. • Scope of the Study

The study examines the role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Ilorin South Local Government Kwara State. The study is limited to selected secondary schools in Ilorin South Local Government Kwara State.

Operational Definition of Terms

• Role: This term refers to the function or part played by a person or thing in a particular situation. In this context, it refers to the part that technology plays in sports performance.
• Technology: This is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. It includes machinery and equipment developed from such scientific knowledge. In the context of sports, it could refer to equipment, software, or methodologies that aid in training, performance, and analysis.
• Sport: This is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. It can range from individual sports like tennis or swimming to team sports like football or basketball.
• Performance: In the context of sports, performance refers to how well a person or team performs in a sport. This can be measured in many ways, such as speed, accuracy, endurance, or the score in a game.
• School: This is an institution for educating children. In this context, it refers to secondary schools in Nigeria where the students are participating in sports.
• Students: These are individuals who are engaged in learning, typically within a school. In this context, it refers to the secondary school students in Nigeria who are the subjects of the study.
