CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • INTRODUCTION

The project will be focused on developing an online book storage and retrieval system however online book storage and retrieval system is defined as a place in which books, manuscripts, recordings, or reference materials are   kept for private or public uses. Typically, online book storage and retrieval system   must be able to handle some information such as acquisition, interlibrary within the various department, cataloging, circulation, serials management, statistical reports and references. An online storage and retrieval system software package is designed especially to enable students have access to various course material read them and can also download these materials .In this introductory chapter some topics are treated such as:

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This reviews the history of the current system (within the various departments) precisely. Statement of the problem: this highlights the challenges facing the various departments in federal polytechnic Nekede. Objective of the study: this is the main target of this project work. To design an online system that can solve the problem of book storage and retrieval in federal polytechnic Nekede. Significance of the study: this reveals the implementation of the new system and its working capabilities to the former trend. Limitation of the study: this has to do with my challenges and bottlenecks as the designer of this very project work. Definition of terms: this is the definition of some course registration vocabularies found in the material.

Federal polytechnic Nekede, Owerri started in 1978, it is regulated by the federal polytechnics Act (CAP 139) of 1979. The function of the polytechnic as provided for in section 2(1) of the Act are as follows:

  • To provide full-time or part-time courses on institution and training in:
  • Technology, Applied science, Commerce and Management.

Since the history of Federal polytechnic Nekede, book storage and retrieval has been on a manual system thus, student has difficulties in accessing various course material in their field of study  also lack of conducive learning environment where the book will be available.is another challenge  During observations, I was opportune to encounter some students who complain bitterly that problem facing the institution is terms of book storage and retrieval  is over crowding this is  another factor that is posing a big problem for student to use library. It is quite excruciating that the institution is still operating on a manual level. The advancement made in technology over the years has been tremendous. The computer alone has progress at a remarkable pace, and updates are continually occurring. Along with the progress of computer comes the transformation of the virtual world. The internet is a fairly recent concept that has profoundly affected our daily lives. As with anything new, the internet possesses various mysteries. Research is being conducted to determine the possibility of an online book storage and retrieval system. Over the years, it has been put under a manual system of operation which mostly results to inaccuracy and ineffective for   the student of various department to have access to the course material anytime. It is gradually been realize that much faster accurate, effective and efficient is needed to be adopted. To salvage the problem, online book storage and retrieval system   is to be instituted to handle book storage and retrieval .The system ensures that any student who wants course material his /her course must sign up in order to obtain a user-name and password which requires the student’s registration number (matriculation number), if he /she does not have a registration number (matriculation number) the system refuses/deny him access to the course materials.

1.3       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem of the existing system includes the following:

1     lack of course material in bookshop and library.

2     over crowding is another factor that is posing a big problem for student to use library.

3    lack of centralize system where student can have access to different materials from    different authors.

4      lack of conducive learning environment where the book will be available.

1.4       AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this work is to design and implement online book storage and retrieval system .which has the following objectives:

  1. the student of various department can have access to the course material anytime
  2. the system will allow links to several authors.
  3. the books can be easily sorted and retrieved online.
  4. The system will allow student to learn from the comfort of their home.

1.5    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the new system is that it will ease for student and the course materials will be available to student anytime they want it. The system will be access over the internet of various department and books and tutorial material will be made available from different authors. The system will allow student to download pdf materials and have access without internet

  1. This project will increase the use of technology and promote information and communication technology awareness.
  2. This project will reduce the manual method of book storage, and increase their service time.

1.6       SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study will cover the following topics in computer science;

Web development, introduction to programming, human computer interaction, and software engineering.

1.7       LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Some of the factors that hinder the progress of this study include;

  1. Time Constraint; There is limited time go and meet the management for proper information.
  2. Financial Constraint; some of the materials needed were too expensive to acquire example during implementation stage.

1.8       DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following are some technical terms that would be seen while reading through this project work. They include;

DESIGN: It is a detail plan or arrangement to achieve a particular purpose.

A SYSTEM: It is an assemblage of interrelated elements, which we find interesting to study. It could be a process, a machine or a program.

A PROGRAM: It is a set of instructions and procedures that tells the computer what to do.

AN APPLICATION: A program designed to perform particular tasks.

THE RESEARCHERS: This refers to the developers of the system in study (i.e. Richard).

THE USER: The user here refers to the library staff or the people who make use of the library. It also refers to the person who uses the program (e.g. library staff).

AUTOMATION/COMPUTERIZATION: It is a process of making a system to carry out its processes on its own. That without much helps from man.

MODULE: An independent unit that is part of a larger development. It is the same thing as sub-tasks.

VISUAL LIBRARY SYSTEM: It is an application or program designed by researchers to manage library operations. It is a program designed with a visual programming language in which the user will make use of a mouse in operating. It is event driven and objects appear in their visual forms to the user.

  • Archive(s): Collection(s) of permanently valuable historical records documenting a particular subject or activity or transaction. Also the repository where such a collection is kept.
  • Bibliography: A list of resources used in writing a research paper or other document that appears at the end of the document. See also: Citation, Reference.
  • CaMS: Cataloging and Metadata Services. Part of Technical Services.
  • Circulation: The circulation desk is the place in the library where you check out, renew, and return library materials. You may also place a hold, or report an item missing from the shelves.
  • Citation: A reference or footnote to a book, a magazine or journal article, or another source. It contains all the information necessary to identify and locate the work, including author, title(s), publisher, date, volume, issue number, and pages.
  • DCRM(B): Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books), the updated “successor” to DCRB (Descriptive Cataloging of Books), meant to update the older guide and bring it into accord with international standards; also the first in an ongoing series of cataloging guides for special collection items covering maps, serials, graphic materials, and other special collections items beyond books alone.
  • Entry: Refers to the data in a catalog record by which it is retrieved, for example, an author entry. Also called a “heading.” Standardized forms of author names and subjects are used in catalog records to facilitate sorting and retrieval.
  • ISBN: International Standard Book Number. The ISBN is a unique machine-readable identification number, which marks any book unmistakably. First implemented in the U.K. in 1967, the ISBN is now used in 159 countries and territories.
  • ISSN: International Standard Serial Number. Eight-digit number which identifies periodical publications, including electronic serials. Created in the 1970’s, the ISSN Network has assigned more than one million ISSN numbers. There are 75 national ISSN centers coordinated by an international center based in Paris; the U.S. center is managed by the National Serials Data Program at the Library of Congress.
  • LISSC: The Library Integrated Systems Steering Committee. The group that reviews policies and procedures that relate to the Integrated Library System.
