INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The implementation of the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools in Abia State has been a subject of interest for many educational researchers. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of societal issues and to develop their critical thinking skills. However, the effectiveness of its implementation has been questioned (Adeyemi, 2018). Adeyemi’s study found that the curriculum was not fully implemented due to a lack of resources and trained teachers. This has resulted in a gap between the intended curriculum and the enacted curriculum.

The lack of resources, particularly instructional materials, has been a significant barrier to the effective implementation of the social studies curriculum. According to Uche and Umoren (2019), many schools in Abia State lack the necessary textbooks and other instructional materials needed to effectively teach social studies. This has led to a reliance on rote learning, which is contrary to the inquiry-based approach advocated by the curriculum.

Furthermore, the lack of trained teachers has also been a significant challenge. A study by Okorie and Uche (2020) found that many teachers in Abia State’s Junior Secondary Schools lack the necessary training in social studies. This has resulted in a lack of understanding of the curriculum’s objectives and the pedagogical strategies needed to achieve them.

However, it’s not all negative. Some schools have been successful in implementing the social studies curriculum. For instance, a case study by Nwankwo (2021) found that some schools in Abia State have been able to overcome these challenges through community support and innovative teaching methods. These schools have shown that with the right support and resources, the social studies curriculum can be effectively implemented.

Despite these challenges, the government of Abia State has made efforts to improve the implementation of the social studies curriculum. According to the Abia State Ministry of Education (2022), the government has invested in teacher training and the provision of instructional materials. However, these efforts have been hampered by budget constraints and other logistical issues.

The implementation of the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools in Abia State has faced significant challenges. • Statement of the Problem

This has resulted in a situation where students are not getting the full benefits of the curriculum.

This has led to a situation where students have a superficial understanding of many topics but lack a deep understanding of any particular topic.

Thirdly, there is the issue of assessment. The current assessment methods used in many schools do not adequately measure students’ understanding of the social studies curriculum (Eze, 2018). This has led to a situation where students who are able to memorize facts and figures are rewarded, while those who are able to critically analyze societal issues are not.

Furthermore, there is the issue of the relevance of the curriculum. Some stakeholders have argued that the social studies curriculum does not adequately address the current societal issues facing Nigeria (Okoro, 2019). This has led to a situation where students are learning about outdated societal issues and are not prepared to deal with the current issues facing the country.

Finally, there is the issue of the implementation strategy. The current strategy of implementing the social studies curriculum does not take into account the unique cultural, economic, and social contexts of Abia State (Nwankwo, 2020). This has led to a situation where the curriculum is not as effective as it could be.

 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The study examines the evaluation of the implementation of social studies curriculum in Secondary School in Abia State. The specific objectives of the study are:

1. To assess the effectiveness of the current social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools.
2. To identify the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools.
3. To evaluate the level of students’ understanding and engagement with the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools.
4. To examine the resources available for the implementation of the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools.

• Research Questions

The research questions are stated below:

1. How effective is the current social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools?
2. What are the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools?
3. What is the level of students’ understanding and engagement with the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools?
4. What resources are available for the implementation of the social studies curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

H_O: The implementation of social studies curriculum has no significant impact on the students in Secondary School.

H₁: The implementation of social studies curriculum has significant impact on the students in Secondary School

• Significance of the Study

The significance of evaluating the implementation of the social studies curriculum in secondary schools in Abia State is multi-faceted. Firstly, it provides an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the current curriculum in achieving its intended outcomes. This includes the development of students’ understanding of societal issues, their ability to think critically, and their capacity to participate actively in their communities. The evaluation can identify areas of strength and weakness in the curriculum, providing valuable insights for educators and policymakers.

Secondly, the evaluation can help to ensure that the curriculum is relevant and responsive to the needs of the students and the wider society. The social studies curriculum should reflect the social, cultural, economic, and political realities of Abia State and Nigeria as a whole. • Scope of the Study

The study examines the evaluation of the implementation of social studies curriculum in Secondary School in Abia State. The study is restricted to selected Secondary Schools in Abia State.

• Operational Definition of Terms

Evaluation: This is a systematic process that involves assessing and interpreting information to make informed decisions. In the context of education, evaluation often refers to the process of determining the effectiveness of a teaching method, curriculum, or educational program based on specific criteria or standards.

 Implementation: This refers to the process of putting a plan, decision, or strategy into effect. In an educational context, implementation could refer to the process of introducing and applying a new curriculum or teaching method in a school or classroom.

 Social Studies: This is a field of study that focuses on human society and social relationships. It often includes various disciplines such as history, geography, political science, economics, and sociology. In schools, social studies education aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become informed and active citizens.

 Curriculum: This is a planned set of courses or subjects that will be taught in a school, college, or university. A curriculum often includes the learning objectives, content, teaching methods, and assessment methods for each subject or course.

Secondary School: This is a school for students who have completed their primary education. In many countries, secondary school is for students aged 12 to 18 and includes middle school (or junior high school) and high school. The curriculum in secondary schools often prepares students for higher education or vocational training.

 Abia State: This is a state in the southeastern part of Nigeria. It is known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse ethnic groups. The state’s education system, like that of many other states in Nigeria, includes primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions.
