CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Over the past decades the state education boards have begun including guidance and counselling in their curriculum at primary and secondary school levels. In fact, guidance and counselors have been posted in many government owned primary and secondary schools and private schools encouraged to do same. The educational system has moved from where educationists try to make the child totally fit into an established disciplined behavior while anything out of this isn’t given attention.
This change in policy of education has come about through the realization that the child’s behaviour deeply affect his academic performances and consequently how much he or she can achieve academically. Every other factors that go into the formation of the child and determine his or her performance comes after the child’s determination to overcome.
Therefore, understanding the factors behind the child’s behaviour will prove very resourceful in understanding the child’s behaviour and his or her attitude to learning which informs his performances.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Education is an active process. Even though it is taken by many as a rite of passage in recent tines, it requires an active participation on the part of the individual, whether infant or adult. In the event that the child has behavioural defects tbat are exhibited in say truancy and other behavioural problems, proper learning is halted because of this lack of commitment and understanding of the importance of the process he is following- education.
The task this research work has assigned itself, then is to study behaviour problems and their effects on the adolescent students’ academic achievements with the college of education at Ankpa as a case study.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1.3.1 what are the prevalent behavioural problems affecting adolescents’ academic achievements.
1.3.2 Which of these are most common among adolescents.
1.3.3 What are the factors that aid in exacerbating these behaviours.
1.3.4 What are the best ways to combat them without negatively affecting the personalities of these adolescents
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objective of this study is to highlight the effects of behavioural problems of adolescents on their academics achievements . Therefore, the research hopes to study the various common behavioural patterns before the child arrives at the College of education and compare it to when these problematic behaviours begin setting in so that the study shows for sure the direct effect of these behaviours on the child’s academic performance after it sets in.
The research also aims at studying such predominant adolescent behavioural problems such as delinquency which is always at the centre of these behaviours. Another is the issue of peer pressure and its remote and immediate consequence in the academics of the child.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research work is of significance to every guidance and counselling department of every school. The findings here will help educators know the history of these behavioural problems and consequently design peculiar solutions for each case. This is a very important research work ask the ages of adolescence is a very complex one with convoluted complexities of being stuck between the child’s age range and adulthood. This usually creates a lot of behavioural issues as the adolescents are trying to find their footing in the world. And this often
On a wider focus, the study will shed light on every other campus both state and federal universities and polytechnics and help understand and develop a pattern of these adolescent problems. It will serve as a primary source of materials in other studies of adolescent related researches.
1.6 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
The hypothesis behind this work is no different from the one which informs other of it’s kind. That adolescent related problem always have academic implication as the latter needs every focus from the learner, it is always impossible to reconcile the problems with studies.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Our research is limited to the adolescent students of the college of Education at Ankpa. Again, we will emphasize the behavioural problems that are particular first to adolescent and how their age range help worsen the situation. The chapters will be structured to better to reflect the strict scope and objectives. The fought chapter will be sectioned to both discuss the effects of these problems and their peculiarity with the adolescent students of college of education Ankpa
1.8 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The major limiting factor of this research is time and space to properly document every findings related to this research.
