ABSTRACT

The church needs to be strategic in its planning and organizing in order to fulfil the great commission. It is just to map out a strategy on how to fulfil the goal of the Great Commission which is making disciples of all nations and this will definitely enhance and sustain the growth of the Church all over the World. The research work is focused on how planning and organizing can sustain the growth of the church using Daystar Christian Center as a case study. The approach employed in carrying out this research is historical method. The research work adopts library and field based approach; this includes the study of related materials which includes books, journals and the use of internet and the conduction of oral interviews. The researcher concludes that though planning and organizing is important for sustainability of the growth of the church, it must not overlook the role of the Holy Spirit as the guide of the Church. Therefore the researcher recommended that the Church must consider planning and organizing as secondary to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Church should not plan or organize any program or any event without consulting the Holy Spirit. The researcher also recommended that the Church must have a well-structured administration with the role and responsibility of each of the members of the organization clearly spelt out.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

In recent decades, the term “planning and organizing” has become popularized widely in management circles. Most managers today, are at least familiar with this terms and its general application. With the increasing rate at which church is established and the teeming challenges that beset many of these religious institutions. Despite all, some thrives while some failed to thrive despite operating in the same environment. This has informed the motive for considering this topic in addition to the fact that many churches are administered without the proper tools that are required to build a fruitful and a church with an upward growth curve even in the face of the storm.

Hence, the subject in question is worth it as we know that these are fundamentals for any administrative operations in any organization or establishment with the church inclusive. Planning and organizing are critical to the success of any organization. The interest in this subject is however, to clearly and carefully look at the interplay of these administrative tools and how it impacts the growth of the Church as we have evidences all around.

The twenty-first century could be described as a world that is exploding with change – Fast, frightening change. It is a mega change. Many institutions – business, government, the schools and the Church – and it is occurring at a number of levels: national, corporate, and individual. The result is a revolution taking place all around us that is likely to be as profound as any in the past. Some wrongly advise us just to be patient, that in time it will all pass. The reality is, however, that there is no end in sight.

Drucker’s opined that “we are living at one of those rare points in time when an old worldview (modernism) and many of its trappings are dying and another (postmodernism) is struggling to be born.[1]   Where is the Church in all this? How is she doing? The typical Church does not understand the full implications of mega change. Even when a church has some understanding of the implications, it doesn’t know how to respond in effective ministry to those immersed in the postmodern paradigm. It is imperative that pastor be able not only to preach to a congregation, but lead very well which involves planning and organizing to effect dynamism into the system of the Church.

  • Statement of the Problem

This research work is set out to address the problem of inadequate planning and organizing as a tool that affects the overall growth and success of the church? As a result, several of such churches which lack planning and organizing are lost or weak with a resultant loss of resources, finance and human capital due to lack of strategic planning and administration. In view of this, the researcher intends to give bounteous solution to this challenges.

  • Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is;

  1. To find out how planning can influence the growth of a church
  2. To examine the effect of organizing in the church as a tool to enhance the upward growth of the church.
  • To investigate inherent factors that could limit the effective usage of these management tools in the church.
  1. To determine the yardsticks that clearly ascertain the growth and non-growth of the Church.
  2. To clearly point out the difference between church growth and development.
  3. To distinguish between Church growth and Kingdom growth.
    • Significance of the Study

In pursuit of a clear understanding of the subject matter, the following are the benefits that this research work will offer. The importance of this research work is as follows:

  1. It would help churches or ministries to pay attention to engaging themselves in strategic planning by setting up strategic team that is saddled with that responsibility.
  2. It would help churches and ministries to develop a working policy at a short, medium and long term basis.
  • It would help churches and ministries to invest resources (material and immaterial) to making plans work out effectively.
  1. It would help churches and ministries to give more attention to extensive training of workers that would further enhance the growth of the church.
  2. It would help churches and ministry to embark organizational restructuring where there need be.
    • Delimitations of the Study

This research work deals extensively with the management variables with much focus on planning and organizing. Even though there are other management tools, this research work is not dealing much with that. Hence with the focus on these variables, its interest is to observe their interplay as it positively impacts on church growth or otherwise.

This study is however looking microscopically at Daystar Christian Centre, Plot 35c Ikosi-Ketu, Lagos, Nigeria. This chosen population is to further relate the subject under study so as to have a realistic outcome to the research.

  • Research Procedure

The approach to this research is historically based. This involves investigating systematically and objectively by collecting, evaluating, verifying, and synthesizing evidence to establish facts and reach defensible conclusions.

This procedure also involves library work with oral interview conducted with the leaders and Pastors of Daystar Christian Centre. This makes it possible to seek information in several ways at various stages explicitly.

  • Limitation of Study

Despite the end product of this research work, this project faced some constraints such as time, fund, gathering of’ materials and co-operation from question respondents at the collection of data. However, the researcher did this possible best to present a valid report.
