CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Some years ago, the use of computer came from into existence and since then the computer has been used to solve many problems which may be too complex within short period of time. A computer is an electronic machine which accepts data in prescribed form, process it and then produces information in a specific format for decision making. The use of computer system to solve problems of manual method which is referred to as computerization has a lot of advantages over the manual methods of solving problems. Among these reasons is voluminous large data i.e. to avoid using manual method when dealing with large amount of volumes or numbers of data. Another reason is neatness of information, because if there is any mistake in manual method of data processing, the user can correct it only by applying correcting fluid or by condemning the whole paper on which it is written and this may lead to delay or makes that work to be rough. But in electronic data processing (computerization) one can correct any mistakes during typesetting without such correction, Toughing up the work.

Computerized online student profile management system is an information system that tells about the particular student bio-data which includes full name, matriculation number, gender, local government and state of origin and with academic performance history of the student (Ayodele, 2010). Instead of a student being physically present at the registry office, he or she just needs to fill all the necessary web forms online and upload all their details. Like the manual system, Student profile is a vital part of any institution of learning because students are what keep an institution alive. A Profile is to represent the outline of somebody face as seen from the side, to write or present a short biographical account or description of somebody or something (Microsoft Encarta, 2008). In another word a profile is information relating to particular characteristic of something, recorded in qualified form (Etymology Dictionary Online, 2018).

In some schools, for example Federal College of Wildlife Management which serve as my case study, all the profile of the students is done manually by ink and paper, which is very slow and consuming much efforts and time. It is required that the Design of a Computerized Online Student Profile Management System, to speed up and make students’ profiling easy. The project is sets on developing the Online Student Profile for Federal College of Wildlife Management New Bussa, Niger State.

In most school today, most of the student profile work is done manually by filling out the form and take the profile to regular place for storage. In management of school, they have to store all data manually by writing it on paper and store it in the regular place. This scenario gives an idea to develop the Student Profile Management System (SPMS). This system focus on student profile management.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Some of the irregularities discovered in the manual system of student profile management include:

Misplacement of Students Profile.
Cost of paper purchase for recording the student information.
Inaccuracy often ensues from human error.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this project is to design and implement online student profile management system. This project has the following objectives:

To develop a model that will manage students’ profile.
To develop a database that will store student’s record.
To implement the system using HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT and PHP

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

Online Student Profile Management System (OSPMS) is a web-based tool to augment online submission of student’s details. This study will be of great significance to the registry and student by reducing the stress encounter in a manual system of student’s profile submission. The goal is to eliminate the time and errors associated with filing the details into their profile. Based on technology, it reduces error occur in manual process of profile submission.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the current application, “Online Student Profile Management System” is that it ensures the students in FCWM to fill their details/information in their profile. Student Profile Management System (SPMS) is a prototype system design for recording and updating of student profile submission.

1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Online in computer science implies activated and ready for operation; capable of communicating with or being controlled by a computer. For example, a printer is online when it can be used for printing; a database is online when it can be used by a person who connects with the computer on which it is stored.

System is any collection of component elements that work together to perform a task. In computer science, system is used in a variety of contexts. System also refers to any collection or combination of programs, procedures, data, and equipment utilized in processing information: an accounting system, a billing system, a database management system.

Database: A database is a system intended to organize, store, and retrieve large amount of data easily. It consists of an organized collection of data for one or more uses, typically in a digital form.

Update: (something) more modern or up to date or it is an act of updating something or an updated version of something.

Profile: a graphical or other representation of information relating to particular characteristics of something, recorded in quantified make.

Bio-data: – is an information relating to a particular person and his or her financial, professional, or educational history, stored in a database and used, e.g. in banking, job recruiting, and marketing.
