CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • INTRODUCTION

Improvement in information and communication technology has made time and space less complex and could be seen that this modern age is the age of information boom in which an average individual wants to explore the information system. Thus, the capability for timely acquisition, utilization, communication and retrieval of relevant and accurate information has become an important attribute for better teaching and learning processes (Adebayo, 2008). The use of ICT in educational arena is not limited to teaching and learning situations alone, but also extend to the administrative assignments. One of such administrative tasks is the development of a web-based radio streaming system.

By definition, radio streaming (also web radio, net radio, internet radio, e-radio, IP radio, and online radio) is a digital audio service transmitted via the Internet. Broadcasting on the Internet is usually referred to as webcasting since it is not transmitted broadly through wireless means. It can either be used as a stand-alone device running through the internet, or as software running through a single computer (Marty, 2005).

Internet radio is generally used to communicate and easily spread messages through the form of talk. It is distributed through a wireless communication network connected to a switch packet network (the internet) via a disclosed source. The Oxford dictionary defines “online” as controlled by or connected to a computer and as an activity or service which is available or performed using the internet or other computer network (Dictionary of British and World English, 2015). As people of this generation become more dependent on the internet for information, the need for automated broadcast becomes more apparent.

Online radio streaming is now used in various academics institute both locally and internationally for information distribution and communication., The information distribution and communication within the institution is done through physical means and as well as social media. Which is stressful or non-reliant. Because student tends to spread false information.

1.2     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A radio streamer is a software or system that collects (accepts) as input, a radio station streaming URL, checks the authenticity of the URL and then connect to it through the internet; and this is done with the aid of the computer.

It offers a more computerized approach to the way and manner we appreciate the use of technology by listening to radio online in our day to day activities thereby reducing the massive limitation that is associated with the limited system of listening through a radio player or a mobile phone.

It serves as an alternative medium to AM/FM when broadcasting a station, but why do we have to make a choice. Some radio stations (within and outside the nation) broadcast online live on the internet and because of the limitation of the FM Radio in accessing frequencies at a very far distance, the software ensures that there is a globalize access to such information when needed. Before developing the software, the perspective of a situation where radio listeners i.e. the users buys a FM/AM radio device and start listening to his/her desired local station. This device must have been preconfigured to have access to these local stations. But before the user will be able to listen to his/her desired station, it is assumed that the radio device must have met certain necessities some. Before the advent of computer technology (internet to be precise), that has been the way people listen to radio but it has a lot of limitations in terms of assessing or listening to radio across the nation or even beyond the vicinities of a local station area.

It was because of this reason that radio stations started broadcasting their programs online. The invention and application of computer and internet now brought succor to the way and manner radio stations broadcast their programs.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Listening to online radio programs in our midst especially among the students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri usually undergo tedious and delayed process, and even when information are ready, students encounter many ups and downs on trying to access the URL of the broadcasting station.

Some of the problems posed by this system include:

  1. Limited access to information.
  2. Unable to access radio stations outside the nation or outside a certain vicinity
  3. Time wasted in getting URL of radio stations.
    • OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The primary aim of this project work is to design and develop an Online Radio Streamer Application that would upon successful completion be able to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Provide ease of access to online listening to radio broadcast.
  2. Easy distribution of information within and outside the campus.
  3. To create an organized and better environment for both the radio stations to reach their users and also for the users to reach the radio station.
  4. To limit the old, manual system and invent a faster, more accurate and safer means of listening to radio stations.
    • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This system when completed and implemented will help in achieving prompt release of information within and outside the campus. Besides it will serve as a reference material for subsequent researchers in the same field or related topics.

  • SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The primary aim of this project work is to design and develop an Online Radio Streamer Application that would upon successful completion be able to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Provide ease of access to online listening to radio broadcast.
  2. Easy distribution of information within and outside the campus.
  3. To create a well-organized and better environment for both the radio stations to reach their users and also for the users to reach the radio stations.
  4. To limit the old, manual system and invent a faster, more accurate and safer means of listening to radio stations.

This system is ideal for its purpose and may be used for other similar usage like listening to local music on the system.

1.7       LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

During the course of the study, the following constraints were encountered;

  1. Limited time duration: The one semester period we had to carry out the study was not adequate. Furthermore, other four courses and seminar demanded my attention too.
  2. Lack of finance: The huge money involved in running to and fro FEDPONEK for data collection, money for computer printing and binding, constituted a major constraint to the project work.
  3. Lack of reference materials: The school library and the nearby public libraries lacked the necessary reference materials needed for the work.

1.8     DEFINITION OF TERMS

Url: (Abbreviated form for Uniform Resource Locator), is a reference to a web resources that specifies its location (address) on a computer network and mechanism for retrieving it.

Website: This is a set of related web pages including multimedia content, typically identified with a common domain name and published on at least one web server.

Radio: Is an electronic device that receives radio waves and converts the information carried by them to a usable form. It is sometimes used with an antenna.

Streaming: Is a flow of data in form of audio broadcast, a movie or a live video, transmitted Online smoothly and continuously from a source to a computer, mobile device, etc.

Computer: Is an electronic device which is capable of receiving information (data) in a particular form and of performing sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions to produce a result in form of information or signal.

Radio Frequency (Rf): Is any electromagnetic wave frequency that lie in the range extending from around 20 KHz to 300GHz.

Terrestrial Radio: The system or industry that broadcasts programs of audio content to the public by the means of radio waves. It is also known as an electronic device for listening to radio programming, consisting of tuner and speakers

File Transfer:   Any kind of computer file can be sent via the Internet from one Internet user to another. Table of accounts on spreadsheets, design by a graphic artists, music sound files etc, can all be exchanged in this way.

Hyperlinks: Hyperlinks are highlighted words and phrase you find on web documents that you can click on as to jump to some other documents or Internet services.

Offline: Disconnected from computer network; describes a computer terminal or peripheral device disconnected from a computer network.

System: Set of computer components that is, an assembling of hardware, software and peripherals functioning together.

Web Brower: This is a special kind of software that processes hypertext mark-up language (HTML) document. In other words, a web browser is a computer program that interprets HTML command to collect, arranged and display the parts of a web page.

Web Site:  A website is a collection of many interconnected web pages organized by a specific college, organization company etc, containing web pages (good and commodities) on the Internet. Websites are stored on web servers. There are many websites and thousands of HTML pages on each web site. A web site is a treasure of information and entertainment.

World Wide Web: World Wide Web simply called www is the most important tool of the Internet. It was created in the late 1980s in Europe and was used limitedly in academic cycle.
