CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

In Nigeria as well as in other countries, education is perceived as a tool for socio-economic and political developments and as such it is accorded the necessary attention.  This position is amplified in the Nigerian National Policy on Education, which stated that education is an instrument par excellence for effecting national development, (The National Policy of Education, 2004).  It is added further that education shall continue to be highly rated in the national development plans because education is the most important instrument of change and that any fundamental change in the intellectual and social outlook of any society has to be preceded by educational revolution (Alio, 2003).

.

The impact of laboratory facilities on the effective teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in junior secondary schools is an important area of research. Laboratory facilities play a crucial role in enhancing the learning experience and understanding of complex concepts in various subjects, including Christian Religious Studies.

Research has shown that the availability of well-equipped laboratory facilities positively influences students’ engagement and interest in the subject. These facilities provide students with hands-on experiences, allowing them to explore and experiment with different aspects of Christian Religious Studies. This practical approach helps students develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter and fosters critical thinking skills (Chiu, 1993).

However, it is important to note that the impact of laboratory facilities on effective teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in junior secondary schools may vary depending on various factors. These factors include the availability of resources, the competence of teachers in utilizing the facilities, and the support and encouragement provided by the school administration.

Laboratory facilities have a significant impact on the effective teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in junior secondary schools. These facilities provide students with hands-on experiences, promote active learning, and enhance their understanding of complex concepts. However, it is crucial for schools to ensure the availability of well-equipped facilities and provide adequate support to teachers to maximize the benefits of these resources.

Recent study by Okwelle P.C.  (2007) proved that adequate supply of instructional resources has significant effects on student’s performances and enhances the effectiveness of instructional delivery and supervision.

Thus, one begins to wonder how some of these universities scale the accreditation hurdle.  That is why Nwadinani  (1994) opined that the quality of education being provided for the Nigerian child has become of concern and lamented on the rot in the educational system.  Also, Nwadinani  (1994) observed that mismatch between growing enrolment and provision of facilities especially in respect of seats for students leads to overcrowding.  He added that overcrowding creates undue stress on available space and results in the creation of rowdy behaviours, hanging outside the classrooms, and absence from activities around school premises.  All these have negative effects on teaching and learning process.

Furthermore, laboratory facilities provide opportunities for students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. Through practical experiments and observations, students can witness the practical implications of Christian Religious Studies concepts, making the learning process more meaningful and relevant.

In addition to enhancing students’ learning experiences, laboratory facilities also contribute to the overall effectiveness of teaching Christian Religious Studies. Teachers can utilize these facilities to demonstrate complex concepts, conduct experiments, and facilitate discussions. This interactive approach promotes active learning and encourages students to actively participate in the learning process.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

One aspect to consider is the role of laboratory facilities in enhancing practical learning experiences. Christian Religious Studies often involves practical activities such as experiments, demonstrations, and simulations. Adequate laboratory facilities can provide students with hands-on experiences that deepen their understanding of the subject matter. However, if these facilities are lacking or inadequate, students may miss out on valuable learning opportunities.

Another aspect to examine is the impact of laboratory facilities on student engagement and motivation. Well-equipped laboratories can create an interactive and stimulating learning environment, encouraging students to actively participate in their learning. On the other hand, a lack of proper facilities may lead to disengagement and reduced interest in the subject.

Furthermore, the availability of laboratory facilities can also affect the quality of instruction. Teachers may struggle to deliver effective lessons without the necessary resources and equipment. This can hinder their ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and engage students in meaningful discussions. Therefore, it is important to investigate how the presence or absence of laboratory facilities influences the teaching methods employed by educators.

Additionally, the impact of laboratory facilities on student achievement and performance should be explored. Access to well-equipped laboratories can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, which can enhance their understanding and retention of the subject matter. Conversely, limited access to laboratory facilities may hinder students’ ability to fully grasp and apply what they have learned.

Moreover, the issue of equity and access needs to be considered. Not all schools may have equal access to laboratory facilities, which can create disparities in educational opportunities. It is crucial to examine how the availability and quality of laboratory facilities vary across different schools and how this impacts the learning outcomes of students in Christian Religious Studies.

The impact of laboratory facilities on the effective teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in junior secondary schools is a significant problem worth investigating. By examining the role of laboratory facilities in practical learning experiences, student engagement and motivation, instructional quality, student achievement, and equity of access, we can gain insights into how to improve the teaching and learning experience in this subject area.
