CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The authority of the Scriptures in contemporary Christianity is a topic that has been widely discussed and debated among theologians, scholars, and believers. The Bible, as the primary source of Christian doctrine, is considered by many to be the ultimate authority on matters of faith and practice. This belief is rooted in the doctrine of biblical inerrancy, which asserts that the Scriptures are without error in their original manuscripts (Geisler & Roach, 2012). However, the interpretation and application of the Scriptures in contemporary Christianity often vary, leading to diverse perspectives on its authority.

The rise of modern biblical criticism in the 19th and 20th centuries has challenged traditional views of biblical authority. Scholars like Rudolf Bultmann and Walter Brueggemann have argued for a more nuanced understanding of the Bible, suggesting that it should be read in its historical and cultural context (Bultmann, 1951; Brueggemann, 1997). This approach, often associated with liberal Christianity, emphasizes the human element in the Bible’s composition and thus tends to view it as a product of its time, not as an infallible or inerrant text.

In contrast, conservative Christians often uphold the doctrine of biblical inerrancy, asserting that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and thus authoritative in all matters of faith and practice (Warfield, 1881). This view is often associated with evangelical Christianity, which emphasizes personal conversion, the authority of the Bible, and the importance of sharing the Christian message (Noll, 2004).

However, there is also a growing movement within contemporary Christianity that seeks to balance these two perspectives. Known as “post-conservative evangelicalism,” this approach recognizes the importance of historical and cultural context in biblical interpretation but also affirms the Bible’s divine inspiration and authority (Grenz, 1993). This movement suggests that the authority of the Scriptures is not diminished by acknowledging their human origins.

The authority of the Scriptures in contemporary Christianity is also influenced by the rise of postmodernism. Postmodern thought, with its skepticism towards absolute truth and emphasis on individual interpretation, has challenged traditional notions of biblical authority (McGrath, 2011). Some Christians have embraced postmodernism, arguing that it allows for a more inclusive and diverse understanding of the Bible. Others, however, see it as a threat to the authority of the Scriptures.

The authority of the Scriptures in contemporary Christianity is a complex and multifaceted issue. It is influenced by a variety of factors, including theological tradition, historical and cultural context, and philosophical trends. While there is no consensus on the matter, the ongoing dialogue reflects the dynamic nature of Christian faith and practice in the modern world.

 Statement of the Problem

The authority of the Scriptures has been a central tenet of Christianity since its inception. The Bible, as the inspired word of God, is considered the ultimate source of truth and guidance for Christians worldwide. However, in contemporary Christianity, the authority of the Scriptures is being questioned and reinterpreted in various ways, leading to a myriad of interpretations and applications.

The first problem arises from the increasing secularization of society. As society becomes more secular, the authority of the Scriptures is often challenged or dismissed as irrelevant. This secular perspective can lead to a disregard for the Bible’s teachings, causing a rift between traditional Christian values and contemporary societal norms. The authority of the Scriptures is further undermined by the rise of relativism, which posits that truth is subjective and varies from person to person. This perspective can lead to a selective approach to Scripture, where individuals pick and choose which parts of the Bible to follow based on their personal beliefs or preferences.

Another issue is the rise of progressive Christianity, which often emphasizes social justice and inclusivity over strict adherence to biblical teachings. While these values are not inherently contradictory to the Bible, they can lead to a reinterpretation of Scripture that deviates from traditional interpretations. This can result in a dilution of the Bible’s authority, as its teachings are adapted to fit contemporary social norms.

Furthermore, the proliferation of different Christian denominations and interpretations of the Bible also contributes to the problem. With over 200 denominations in the United States alone, each with their unique interpretation of the Scriptures, it can be challenging to establish a unified understanding of the Bible’s authority. This diversity of interpretations can lead to confusion and disagreement among Christians about the true meaning and authority of the Scriptures.

The influence of modern science and technology also poses a challenge to the authority of the Scriptures. Many scientific discoveries seem to contradict biblical accounts, leading some to question the Bible’s accuracy and, by extension, its authority. This tension between science and religion can lead to a crisis of faith for some Christians, further undermining the authority of the Scriptures.

The authority of the Scriptures in contemporary Christianity is being challenged by secularization, relativism, progressive Christianity, denominational diversity, and the influence of science and technology. These challenges necessitate a thoughtful and nuanced approach to understanding and applying the Bible in the modern world. As Christians navigate these issues, it is crucial to remember the central role of the Scriptures in Christian faith and practice.

1.6.  Significance of the Study

The significance of the study of the authority of the scriptures and contemporary Christianity is multifaceted and profound. The scriptures, primarily the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, are considered the authoritative word of God by Christians worldwide. They serve as the foundation for Christian beliefs, practices, and moral guidelines. The authority of the scriptures is a fundamental aspect of Christianity, as it is believed to be the divine revelation of God’s will and purpose for humanity. Therefore, understanding the authority of the scriptures is crucial for contemporary Christians to navigate their faith in the modern world.

In the context of contemporary Christianity, the authority of the scriptures is often challenged by societal changes and advancements in scientific knowledge. For instance, issues such as gender equality, homosexuality, and evolution often conflict with traditional interpretations of the scriptures. This has led to a variety of responses from Christians, ranging from strict adherence to traditional interpretations to more liberal interpretations that accommodate modern understandings. Studying these responses can provide valuable insights into how contemporary Christianity adapts to societal changes while maintaining its foundational beliefs.

Furthermore, the study of the authority of the scriptures in contemporary Christianity can help bridge the gap between faith and reason. Many Christians struggle with reconciling their faith with modern scientific knowledge and societal norms. By studying the authority of the scriptures, Christians can gain a deeper understanding of their faith and learn how to integrate it with their understanding of the world. This can lead to a more holistic and nuanced faith that is both intellectually satisfying and spiritually fulfilling.

The study of the authority of the scriptures also has significant implications for interfaith dialogue. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding the beliefs and practices of different religions is crucial for promoting mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. By studying the authority of the scriptures in Christianity, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of Christian beliefs and practices, which can facilitate more informed and respectful interfaith dialogue.

Moreover, the study of the authority of the scriptures can also contribute to the development of Christian theology. Theology is the study of the nature of God and religious beliefs, and it is constantly evolving in response to new interpretations of the scriptures and changes in societal norms. By studying the authority of the scriptures, theologians can develop new interpretations and theological concepts that reflect the realities of contemporary Christianity.

The study of the authority of the scriptures and contemporary Christianity is of great significance. It can provide valuable insights into the beliefs and practices of contemporary Christians, facilitate interfaith dialogue, contribute to the development of Christian theology, and help Christians navigate their faith in the modern world. Therefore, it is a worthy subject of study for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of contemporary Christianity.
