INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is universally recognized as the bedrock of national development and a crucial instrument for personal and societal advancement. It equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to contribute meaningfully to the economic, political, and cultural life of a nation. For this reason, improving students’ academic performance has become a major concern for educators, parents, policymakers, and stakeholders in the education sector. In an increasingly competitive global environment, nations that fail to prioritize effective learning strategies risk falling behind in innovation and human capital development.
The 21st century has ushered in rapid changes in teaching and learning approaches, largely influenced by advances in science and technology. One such innovation is the integration of audio-visual instructional materials, which include projectors, films, videos, charts, interactive slides, and sound recordings. These tools go beyond traditional chalk-and-talk methods, enabling teachers to present concepts in ways that appeal to multiple senses. Mayer (2021) explains that audio-visuals provide dual channels for learners to process information—both visually and aurally—leading to improved comprehension, retention, and application of knowledge.
Historically, the Nigerian education system has relied heavily on conventional methods of teaching. Instruction has often been teacher-centered, emphasizing rote memorization rather than critical thinking or creativity. This has resulted in classrooms where students remain passive listeners rather than active participants in the learning process (Onasanya & Adegbija, 2007). Consequently, student engagement and motivation have been low, contributing to poor academic outcomes, especially in subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, and the Sciences, which require deep understanding and problem-solving skills.
Audio-visual instructional materials present an opportunity to bridge this gap. They not only make lessons more engaging but also accommodate diverse learning styles among students. For instance, while some learners understand better through visual illustrations, others may grasp concepts more effectively through audio explanations or demonstrations. Research evidence suggests that when students are exposed to carefully selected and well-structured audio-visual content, their curiosity is stimulated, their understanding deepened, and their academic performance significantly improved (Ajayi, 2019).
In addition to enhancing comprehension, audio-visuals also play a motivational role in the learning process. Students often find it easier to connect with real-life situations when lessons are supported with pictures, animations, or videos. For example, a science lesson on plant growth may be better understood when supported with time-lapse video clips rather than verbal explanations alone. Such approaches make learning more practical, memorable, and enjoyable, thereby improving academic achievement.
Despite the benefits of audio-visuals, their adoption in Nigerian schools has been inconsistent and fraught with challenges. Many secondary schools lack the necessary infrastructure, such as electricity, projectors, and computer systems, while others suffer from inadequate funding to procure and maintain instructional materials. Moreover, some teachers are either untrained or reluctant to adopt new technologies, preferring the comfort of traditional methods (Okwo & Ike, 2015). These challenges limit the extent to which students can benefit from audio-visual innovations.
In Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the situation mirrors these national challenges. Reports indicate that many schools in the area face issues such as overcrowded classrooms, poor resource allocation, and minimal use of technological aids. Students in such environments often struggle with low comprehension and retention, leading to poor performance in both internal and external examinations. This raises the urgent need to evaluate whether the introduction and effective use of audio-visual materials can provide a viable solution to these persistent educational challenges.
Against this background, this study seeks to investigate the effect of audio-visuals on the academic performance of secondary school students in Abakaliki LGA, Ebonyi State. By exploring the extent of audio-visual utilization, their influence on comprehension and retention, as well as the overall relationship between their use and academic performance, the study aims to generate insights that can inform educators, policymakers, and administrators on strategies to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the concerted efforts of the Nigerian government to improve the quality of education, the academic performance of secondary school students remains a matter of concern. Reports from public examinations such as WAEC and NECO reveal consistent underperformance, particularly in core subjects like Mathematics, English, and the Sciences. These subjects are fundamental for higher education and career opportunities, yet many students fail to achieve the required pass marks. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of current teaching methods and the resources available for learning.
One major factor contributing to this persistent problem is the over-reliance on traditional teaching approaches, which are largely teacher-centered. Lessons are often delivered through verbal explanations and rote memorization, leaving little room for active student engagement. As a result, many learners find lessons monotonous, abstract, and difficult to relate to real-life situations. In Abakaliki Local Government Area, the situation is no different. Anecdotal evidence and existing studies suggest that a significant number of students in the area struggle with comprehension, retention, and the application of knowledge, which directly affects their academic outcomes (Okwo & Ike, 2015).
The introduction of audio-visual instructional materials has been identified as a potential solution to this problem. Audio-visuals make lessons more interactive and relatable, thereby stimulating student interest and improving comprehension. For example, a Biology lesson on human anatomy can be more effective when supported by diagrams, animations, or videos rather than mere verbal descriptions. However, while the potential of audio-visuals is widely acknowledged in literature, their practical implementation in many schools remains inadequate.
Some schools in Abakaliki LGA have access to audio-visual materials such as projectors, computers, and charts, but their use is either minimal or inconsistent. This may be due to a lack of technical knowledge among teachers, inadequate training on instructional technology, or poor maintenance of available facilities. In some cases, teachers are reluctant to embrace new methods, preferring the familiarity of traditional teaching techniques. Consequently, students are deprived of opportunities to learn through engaging and innovative methods that could improve their academic performance.
Furthermore, infrastructural challenges such as irregular electricity supply, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate funding further hinder the effective use of audio-visual materials in many schools. Even when audio-visual resources are available, these limitations make their utilization difficult or unsustainable. As a result, the gap between the potential benefits of audio-visual instruction and its actual impact on students’ learning outcomes continues to widen.
The central problem this study seeks to address, therefore, is whether the adoption and effective utilization of audio-visual materials can significantly improve the academic performance of secondary school students in Abakaliki LGA. By investigating the extent of their use, the challenges hindering their application, and their actual impact on learning outcomes, the study aims to provide evidence-based insights that can guide educators, administrators, and policymakers in enhancing teaching and learning in the region.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of audio-visuals on the academic performance of secondary school students in Abakaliki LGA of Ebonyi State. Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the extent to which audio-visuals are utilized in secondary schools in Abakaliki LGA.
- Assess the impact of audio-visuals on students’ comprehension and retention of subject matter.
- Evaluate the relationship between audio-visual usage and students’ academic performance.
- Identify the challenges hindering the effective use of audio-visuals in secondary schools within Abakaliki LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- To what extent are audio-visuals utilized in secondary schools in Abakaliki LGA?
- What is the effect of audio-visuals on students’ comprehension and retention of lessons?
- How does the use of audio-visuals relate to students’ academic performance in secondary schools?
- What challenges hinder the effective use of audio-visuals in secondary schools in Abakaliki LGA?
1.5 Hypothesis of the Study
The following hypothesis will be tested:
H₀: There is no significant effect of audio-visuals on the academic performance of secondary school students in Abakaliki LGA, Ebonyi State.
H₁: There is a significant effect of audio-visuals on the academic performance of secondary school students in Abakaliki LGA, Ebonyi State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be of great importance to teachers, who serve as the direct facilitators of learning in the classroom. Many teachers in secondary schools still depend heavily on traditional methods, often unaware of the potential benefits of integrating audio-visuals into their lessons. By providing evidence-based insights, this study will demonstrate how audio-visuals can improve comprehension, stimulate interest, and ultimately enhance academic performance. With this knowledge, teachers will be encouraged to adopt more interactive and student-centered teaching practices that align with global educational trends.
In addition, the study will be significant to policymakers and school administrators. Decisions regarding resource allocation, teacher training, and curriculum development often depend on research-based evidence. The results of this study will highlight the importance of investing in audio-visual facilities and ensuring that teachers are adequately trained to use them effectively. Improved academic performance will also boost their chances of success in both internal and external examinations, thereby opening up better opportunities for higher education and career development.
Furthermore, parents and guardians stand to benefit from the study. Parents are often concerned about their children’s performance in school, particularly in critical subjects that determine admission into tertiary institutions. The study will provide them with insights into how audio-visual resources can support their children’s learning. Informed parents may also be more willing to collaborate with schools in providing or supporting the procurement of audio-visual facilities, thereby fostering stronger home-school partnerships.
The study also has significant implications for government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) concerned with educational development. Findings will serve as a guide for targeted interventions aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in secondary schools. For instance, NGOs working in the education sector may use the evidence from this study to design programs that provide audio-visual facilities, training, or infrastructure to schools in need, especially in resource-constrained areas like Abakaliki LGA.
Finally, the study will contribute to the body of existing knowledge in instructional technology and serve as a valuable reference for future researchers. Scholars interested in exploring the role of technology in education will find this study useful as a foundation for further investigations. 1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on secondary schools located within Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. It examines the extent of audio-visual usage, its impact on comprehension, and its effect on students’ academic performance. The research will be limited to selected schools due to time and financial constraints, but the findings will provide useful insights applicable to other regions.
1.8 Definition of Terms
To ensure clarity and avoid ambiguity in the interpretation of concepts used in this study, the following terms are defined in the context of the research:
Audio-Visuals: These refer to instructional materials that communicate information using both sound and visual elements simultaneously. Examples include projectors, films, videos, slides, animations, charts, and digital presentations. In this study, audio-visuals are considered teaching aids used to enhance students’ understanding, retention, and participation in classroom learning.
Academic Performance: This refers to the measurable learning outcomes of students, usually assessed through class tests, assignments, projects, and examinations. It indicates how well students have achieved specific educational objectives in their subjects. In this study, academic performance relates to students’ achievement levels as influenced by the use of audio-visual instructional materials.
Secondary School Students: These are learners who are enrolled in post-primary institutions, typically between Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3). In the context of this study, the focus is on students attending secondary schools within Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Instructional Materials: These are resources used by teachers to facilitate effective teaching and learning. They include textbooks, charts, models, audio-visuals, and digital tools. In this study, the emphasis is on audio-visual instructional materials as a category of teaching resources.
Comprehension: This refers to the ability of students to understand, interpret, and make sense of the information or lessons taught. It involves grasping the meaning of concepts and being able to explain them in one’s own words. Within this study, comprehension is measured in relation to how effectively audio-visuals support students in understanding subject matter.
Retention: Retention is the ability of learners to recall, remember, and apply knowledge or concepts learned over a period of time. In this study, it denotes how audio-visuals contribute to the long-term memory and recall capacity of students in academic subjects.
