New Testament Biblical view on Evangelism and Church Growth
Many passages in the New Testament address the topic of evangelism and the expansion of the church. In Matthew 28:19-20, for example, Jesus tells his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations,” instructing them to baptise new believers in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and to teach them to keep all of Jesus’s commands. The necessity of sharing the Gospel and gaining new converts is emphasised in this verse.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus informs his followers that they will be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the world because they will acquire power when the Holy Spirit descends upon them. This passage emphasises the worldwide nature of evangelism and the Holy Spirit’s involvement in enabling Christians to spread the Gospel.
Furthermore, several examples of evangelism and the expansion of the church may be found throughout the book of Acts. In Acts 2, for instance, the Holy Spirit is poured out on the day of Pentecost, which prompts Peter to offer a life-changing sermon that results in the salvation of multitudes. This moment is significant because it symbolises the beginning of the early church and shows how the Gospel can change people’s lives.
Furthermore, the New Testament letters of the apostle Paul are rich in instruction on evangelism and the development of the church. Paul writes in Romans 1:15-16 about his excitement to preach the Gospel in Rome and his hope for a spiritual harvest there. He also stresses the necessity of telling people about Christ and the redemption that comes through him.
The New Testament as a whole offers a wealth of information from which to study the spread of the gospel and the development of the church. It highlights Jesus’ Great Commission to his followers, the Holy Spirit’s enabling work in the lives of Christians, and the growth of the early church as an illustration of this. Today’s believers may look to these texts for direction and encouragement as they strive to spread the gospel and grow the church.
