INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The development of student character is a multidimensional process influenced by various social agents, with parents and teachers playing critical roles. Research highlights that strong parent-teacher partnerships can significantly influence students’ moral, social, and emotional growth (Epstein, 2018). According to Epstein’s framework of overlapping spheres of influence, students benefit most when schools and families collaborate closely, sharing common goals for student development. When these partnerships are nurtured, children tend to exhibit higher levels of responsibility, empathy, and self-discipline, essential traits of good character.

Effective communication between parents and teachers is central to building these partnerships. Studies have found that regular, meaningful communication helps align expectations and reinforces consistent behavioral standards at home and school (Henderson & Mapp, 2002). For instance, when teachers communicate character goals and disciplinary strategies with parents, students receive unified messages about appropriate behavior. This congruence fosters environments conducive to the internalization of positive character traits such as honesty, respect, and perseverance (Berkowitz & Bier, 2005).

Moreover, collaborative parent-teacher efforts extend beyond academic support and influence a child’s emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Weiss et al. (2009) argue that when parents are actively involved in school activities and decision-making, students demonstrate stronger peer relationships and more cooperative behaviors. This social development is a foundational element of character education, encouraging students to act ethically and empathetically in their interactions.

Socioeconomic and cultural factors, however, can shape the effectiveness of these partnerships. Parents from marginalized communities may face systemic barriers that hinder engagement, such as language differences, work constraints, or previous negative experiences with educational institutions (Auerbach, 2007). 1.2. Statement of the Problem

This poses a significant challenge as students not only need academic knowledge to succeed, but also strong moral foundations to become responsible citizens. This research addresses a gap in localized studies by focusing on how collaboration between parents and educators can positively influence students’ attitudes, ethical behavior, and interpersonal skills.

For educators, the findings from this study provide valuable insights into how effective communication and cooperation with parents can enhance their ability to instill core values such as responsibility, respect, honesty, and perseverance in students. It highlights the need for schools to go beyond academic instruction and recognize their role in supporting holistic development. Teachers can use the results to adopt more inclusive strategies that invite parental involvement in moral and behavioral guidance.

Parents also stand to benefit significantly from this study, as it underscores the importance of their active involvement in their children’s education beyond homework and attendance. Schools do not operate in isolation, and this study reinforces the idea that strong partnerships between parents and teachers can serve as a foundational pillar for nurturing disciplined, respectful, and civic-minded youths in Chanchaga Local Government. A collaborative approach not only improves students’ character but also strengthens community bonds and collective accountability.
