INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Libraries play a pivotal role in enhancing the academic performance of secondary school students by providing access to a vast array of information resources and study materials. Numerous studies emphasize the critical contribution of library services to academic achievement. A well-equipped school library, with a broad range of books, journals, and electronic resources, serves as an academic resource center that complements the curriculum and supports self-directed learning (Afolabi, 2014). Secondary school students who actively engage with library resources tend to perform better academically, as they have access to additional materials that help them understand the content covered in class more effectively (Okunade, 2015).

One of the core ways in which library services influence academic performance is through the availability of a conducive learning environment. Libraries provide quiet spaces for reading and studying, free from the distractions often present in other areas of the school. According to Owusu-Ansah and Osei (2017), libraries that offer a comfortable and quiet atmosphere are crucial for fostering concentration and focus among students. This environment encourages students to dedicate time to reading and researching, which can enhance their understanding of subject matter and improve their overall academic performance. Research shows that students who regularly use the library for studying exhibit higher levels of academic achievement (Adeniran & Olaosebikan, 2019).

In addition to offering a quiet space, libraries provide students with access to information and resources beyond the classroom. A study by Aina (2017) found that secondary school students who used the library for supplementary learning materials, such as textbooks, academic journals, and online databases, had higher academic performance than those who solely relied on classroom materials. Libraries also offer guidance through trained librarians who assist students in finding and using resources effectively. This guidance enhances students’ research skills, which are essential for academic success, particularly in preparing for exams, assignments, and projects (Ajayi, 2016).

Technology integration in libraries has further revolutionized the role of libraries in enhancing academic performance. Digital resources, including e-books, online databases, and educational software, are increasingly being incorporated into secondary school library services (Nwosu & Olise, 2015). These technological tools provide students with immediate access to a wider range of academic materials, enabling them to deepen their understanding of various subjects. A study by Adewumi (2018) highlighted that students who utilized e-resources in the library performed better in their exams compared to those who did not use such resources. The incorporation of technology into library services, therefore, enhances students’ ability to engage in independent learning and improve academic outcomes.

Another significant aspect is the role of library staff in facilitating students’ academic development. The presence of well-trained librarians who are knowledgeable about the available resources and how to use them can have a profound impact on students’ academic performance. According to Ogundele and Babalola (2019), librarians serve as academic guides who not only assist with locating materials but also provide personalized support in information retrieval, critical thinking, and research. Effective librarian-student interactions help students develop important academic skills, including information literacy, which can contribute to better academic performance in both schoolwork and exams.

Despite the acknowledged importance of library services, challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of modern facilities, and insufficient training of library staff in some regions may hinder the full potential of libraries in enhancing academic performance. Several studies have highlighted that poorly resourced libraries or those with outdated collections are less likely to support students effectively (Ogunrinde & Adeyemi, 2017). However, research consistently indicates that when libraries are adequately funded, well-equipped, and staffed by knowledgeable professionals, they significantly improve students’ academic outcomes. As highlighted by Ogunyemi (2018), effective library services have the potential to bridge the gap between students’ academic needs and the resources required to meet those needs.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

The academic performance of secondary school students has long been a topic of interest for educators, policymakers, and researchers. While numerous factors influence student achievement, the role of school libraries remains a critical yet often underexplored aspect. Libraries are traditionally viewed as repositories of knowledge, but their impact on students’ academic performance is frequently overlooked in educational research. Despite the recognized importance of library services in providing access to learning resources, fostering independent study, and supporting curriculum-based learning, there is limited empirical data on how these services directly affect the academic success of secondary school students, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. This gap in research makes it difficult for educators and school administrators to fully comprehend the value of investing in robust library services.

Many secondary schools, particularly in rural or underfunded areas, face challenges in providing adequate library services. These challenges include a lack of sufficient books, outdated resources, limited access to digital materials, and poorly maintained library facilities. In such environments, students may not have the necessary resources to improve their understanding of academic subjects outside the classroom. Consequently, the question arises as to how the limited access to library services affects students’ academic performance. Studies have suggested that students with regular access to well-equipped libraries tend to perform better, but the direct correlation between library services and improved academic outcomes remains unclear in many contexts. This gap presents a critical issue for educational stakeholders who are striving to enhance student achievement.

Another concern is the lack of sufficient training for librarians in secondary schools. In many schools, librarians may not be adequately equipped with the knowledge or skills to guide students in using the library effectively. The absence of well-trained library staff can hinder students’ ability to navigate resources, conduct research, and develop important academic skills such as critical thinking and information literacy. The integration of technology can provide students with access to a wider range of information, improving their ability to learn and study independently. However, not all schools have the financial resources or infrastructure to implement such technological advancements. The limited use of digital resources may restrict students’ ability to enhance their academic performance, particularly in a rapidly evolving educational landscape where technology is playing an increasingly vital role.

The significance of a conducive learning environment within the library also raises concerns. Libraries are not only places for accessing books and materials but also spaces that offer quiet study areas, which are essential for academic success. However, many secondary school libraries do not provide such conducive environments, and students may have to contend with noise or overcrowded conditions that hinder their ability to concentrate and engage with study materials effectively. This issue is particularly prominent in schools with inadequate infrastructure and poor library management. Without a suitable study environment, students may struggle to focus on their academic tasks, which can negatively impact their learning outcomes.

Finally, the lack of comprehensive research on the influence of library services on academic performance in secondary schools in various regions makes it difficult to formulate effective policies aimed at improving education through library services. While some studies have explored this issue, many are either outdated or limited to specific geographic regions. Therefore, there is a need for updated, region-specific research to understand how library services are affecting students’ academic performance in different contexts. This research is essential for developing strategies to optimize library services, improve student outcomes, and provide evidence-based recommendations to educational policymakers.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine influence of Library Services on Students Academic Performance among Secondary School Students. A case study in Akure Local Government. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the availability and accessibility of library services in secondary schools.
2. To examine the utilization of library resources by students for academic purposes.
3. To determine the impact of library services on students’ academic performance.
4. To identify any challenges students face in using library services effectively.

1.6. Significance of the Study

Secondary schools in Akure Local Government, like many others in Nigeria, may face limitations in the availability of quality educational resources, and this research will explore whether these constraints have a direct impact on student performance. As the study explores the role of trained library staff in supporting students’ academic development, it could provide insights into the need for enhanced librarian training programs. Properly trained librarians can help students navigate available resources effectively, develop critical research skills, and foster a more independent approach to learning. The findings could advocate for the inclusion of specialized training for librarians, thereby improving their ability to guide students and contribute meaningfully to their academic success. This, in turn, would improve the overall functionality and impact of school libraries in Akure Local Government.

By narrowing the focus to secondary schools in Akure, this research will provide more localized insights that can be applied specifically to schools in the region. The study will also contribute to the development of educational policies that recognize the importance of well-equipped, well-staffed school libraries in supporting students’ academic development. Such policies could directly benefit students in Akure Local Government by improving their access to resources and creating more supportive learning environments.

Additionally, this research will highlight the importance of technological integration within school libraries. With the increasing use of digital tools in education, understanding how technology impacts students’ library usage and academic performance is essential. The study will examine whether the availability of digital resources such as e-books, online journals, and educational software influences students’ ability to perform better academically. By highlighting the role of technology in school libraries, this study may encourage the integration of more digital resources in the libraries of Akure Local Government, providing students with additional avenues for learning and improving their academic performance.

Finally, the findings of this study could serve as a model for other local governments and educational systems across Nigeria and other developing countries facing similar challenges. The results may prompt further research into the effectiveness of library services in diverse educational contexts, and the success of any improvements made in Akure could inspire similar initiatives in other regions. In this way, the study not only benefits the students and schools of Akure Local Government but could also play a role in improving educational standards on a broader scale. By demonstrating the positive correlation between library services and academic performance, the study could advocate for a national or regional strategy aimed at strengthening school library services for enhanced student outcomes.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study examines the influence of Library Services on Students Academic Performance among Secondary School Students. A case study in Akure Local Government.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Influence: Influence refers to the capacity or power to have an effect on the behavior, development, or decisions of someone or something. In the context of this study, “influence” implies the impact or effect that library services have on students’ academic performance, either positively or negatively, based on how these services are utilized by students.

Library Services: Library services refer to the range of resources, facilities, and support provided by a library to its users, which include physical materials (books, journals, magazines), digital resources (e-books, online databases, educational software), and the services offered by trained library staff. These services aim to support learning, research, and academic development by offering access to information and a conducive study environment for students.

Students: Students are individuals enrolled in an educational institution, particularly those who are actively engaged in learning and academic activities. In this study, students are secondary school pupils who use the library resources to assist with their studies and improve their academic performance. They are the primary participants whose academic outcomes are being evaluated in relation to library services.

Academic Performance: Academic performance refers to the measurable outcomes of a student’s learning process, typically assessed through grades, test scores, assignments, and other academic achievements. It indicates the level of success a student has in mastering the required curriculum and is often used as an indicator of their educational progress and capability.

Secondary School: Secondary school refers to the educational institution that provides schooling for students typically aged between 12 to 18 years. It serves as the bridge between primary education and higher education, offering various academic programs to prepare students for future educational pursuits or professional careers. Secondary schools are generally divided into junior and senior levels and focus on subjects such as mathematics, science, social studies, and languages.
