In the context of nursery education, parental involvement can take several forms, ranging from providing a supportive home learning environment to participating in school activities. According to Epstein (2001), the various dimensions of parental involvement—such as communication with teachers, volunteering in school events, and engaging in home-based educational activities—play a significant role in shaping young children’s academic trajectories. This early engagement can lay the foundation for positive attitudes towards learning that persist throughout their schooling.

The impact of parental involvement is particularly pronounced during the early years of education. Research by Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (1997) highlights the importance of parental encouragement and active participation in a child’s development from the nursery stage. These early interventions help children develop foundational cognitive and emotional skills that are essential for academic success. Ho: Parental involvement has no significant impact on pupils’ academic performance in nursery settings.

1.6. Significance of the Study

This study holds significant value in enhancing the understanding of the pivotal role that parental involvement plays in the academic success of nursery-aged children. 1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines Parental involvement in the academic pursuit of their nursery children and pupils’ academic performance. The study is limited to parents of pupils in five selected nursery schools in Ikorodu, Lagos.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

1. Parental Involvement:Parental involvement refers to the active participation and engagement of parents in their children’s education. It encompasses a variety of activities, such as helping with homework, attending school events, maintaining communication with teachers, participating in parent-teacher associations, and providing emotional and motivational support for academic endeavors. Parental involvement is considered crucial for fostering a child’s learning and overall development, and it has been linked to improved academic performance and well-being in children.
2. Academic Pursuit:Academic pursuit refers to the efforts and activities focused on achieving educational goals, particularly in a formal setting. It includes activities such as studying, engaging in learning processes, participating in school-related tasks, and striving to attain knowledge and academic success. In the context of this study, academic pursuit can refer to the child’s journey of learning and acquiring knowledge at the nursery or early childhood education level, as guided by parents and teachers.
3. Nursery Children:Nursery children refer to young children, typically between the ages of 3 and 5, who are in the early stages of formal education. Nursery is an educational setting that serves as a foundation for learning, focusing on the development of basic cognitive, motor, social, and emotional skills. At this stage, children are often introduced to early concepts of literacy, numeracy, language, and socialization. Nursery education is crucial for laying the groundwork for future academic learning and personal development.
4. Pupils:Pupils are children or students enrolled in a school or educational institution. The term is generally used to describe learners who are attending a formal education system, ranging from early education through to secondary school.
