CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

Since the emergence of the computer, job processing and transfer of information has become a lot easier. The ability of the computer to process jobs accurately and on time has made it a necessary tool in virtually all the different works of life. The use of the computer in the educational sector has increased tremendously as computers can be found not only in tertiary institutions but also in elementary and secondary schools.

Teaching packages are developed using computers to help and combat the problems associated with the manual type of teaching and it also serves as a means to help and improve the students understanding and performance in the subject.

This project works off-line and is centered on arithmetic which is a branch of Mathematics that consists of the study of numbers, especially the properties of the traditional operations between them:

  1. Addition
  2. Subtraction
  3. Multiplication
  4. Division

The package doesn’t wish to totally replace the human method of teaching but wishes to serve as an aid in imparting students with knowledge concerning the basics of Mathematics.

  • BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Mathematics is one of the courses that is required in almost all of our human endeavors ranging from reasoning to critical thinking and problem-solving. Despite this fact, the percentage of people who can solve Mathematical problems is still below average requirement.

Based on this problem and other problems associated with the manual method of teaching, an application was developed and it follows a step by step method in teaching students the basics of arithmetic. The student is expected to be well grounded in the basics of arithmetic after using the software and playing the game.

The arithmetic game software comprises of the following:

  1. Simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations.
  2. Practice quiz.
  3. Simplified arithmetic game.

1.3  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Lots of obstacles have been encountered due to the manual method of teaching Mathematics.

  • Students avoid Mathematical lessons because they feel the phobia they have for the subject.
  • Most teachers are not well grounded in the course
  • Proper attention not paid to students with low intelligent quotient (IQ) or students who are slow in learning.

  • OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
  • To make the learning of Mathematics easier as the students can use the application at their own convenient time.
  • To make the students appreciate the need for more well-organized methods of teaching
  • To lessen the heavy burden teachers go through while teaching.

1.4  PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of the study is as follows

  • To bring the students close to the interactive nature of computer programming.
  • To improve the students’ understanding towards the application of Mathematical problem-solving
  • To make the teaching of Mathematics more attractive and less cost effective.

  • SCOPE OF STUDY

The researcher intends to eliminate the problems encountered by the use of the manual system of teaching arithmetic in elementary schools.

The following aspects were covered:

  1. Addition
  2. Subtraction
  3. Multiplication
  4. Division
  5. Figure to words conversion

  • LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Due to the ambiguous nature of Mathematics, time and finance, the researcher decided to include only the basics of the arithmetic calculations and operations in the application.

1.8  DEFINITION OF TERMS

  • Programming language: a language used to give instructions to the computer.
  • Application: a set of instructions given to the computer to perform a task.
  • Compiler: a program that translates a high-level language into a low-level
  • High-level language: a programming language that needs a compiler before the computer can understand it.
  • Tutor: an instructor, private teacher or machine that teaches or gives instructions.
