CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1  Introduction

Android enabled Java tutoring and certification is the process of learning Java programming Language in a mobile, virtual environment or networked environment in which teachers and learners are separated by time and space. The contents of the mobile-based Java tutoring and certification system are organized into different modules that comprise of interactive learning interface. Videos and documents can be added and modified by the system administrators for a successful online tutoring. A student can learn via mobile phone the Java tutorials provided by National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) and gain knowledge in developing software applications using Java Programming Language. An online test will be taken after the duration of the course of study, if the student achieves certification status, NIIT will offer a Java Programming Certificate.  All the processes involved are done over the internet.

1.2  Background of the Study

The application of computers in learning and teaching has evolved from simple text to audio and visual communications. Mobile-based java tutorial and certification system for NIIT is a tutorial website that has books and audio-visual capabilities which runs on a computer. Tutoring involving the use of a computer is simply a situation whereby the computer software will be the instructor or lecturer while the user is the student.

1.3  Statement of the problem

Students bring to class different background, experience, interests and attitude. It is impossible to meet the optimal learning pace of all students because one teacher cannot deliver dozens of customized lessons simultaneously. Teachers do their best by teaching in the middle of the class, but in trying to meet the need of all students, they meet the needs of few, slower students are left behind while faster students are left twiddling their thumbs. The time of both groups is wasted.The students are not neatly sorted into slow and fast learner.

In reality, each student finds certain topics easier relative to the rest of the class. There are three layers of student differences: general student ability, specific topic ability and minute-to-minute variation in a student’s focus. Together, these make it impossible for teachers to meet the optimal learning pace of all students at all times.

Students frequently miss class, conversely, a student cannot be absent from a video tutorial since the media reveals their content only when a student is ready to learn. Even students who attend class can miss critical idea when their focus fades. Nowadays, the term also referred to a virtual learning environment, supporting the learning relevant and effective learning resources becomes a crucial element factor in the success of the tutorial topics.

1.4  Objective of the study

The aim of this project work is to design and develop a website that will have feature for mobile-based Java tutorial and certification system with the following objectives:

• To analyze an existing NIIT tutorial system with a view to identifying their weaknesses and strengths.
• To design a user-friendly interface for learning using web tools
• To design an effective mobile-based java tutorial and certification system
• To use Android to coordinate interaction between the user and the database
• To use SQLite for storing the data required by the Android

1.5  Scope of the study

This NIIT mobile based Java tutorial and certification system focuses on basic java topics and also creates an application to teach and offer a certificate to students after passing an online test that qualifies the student to be offered a certificate. It introduces the users to the basic aspect of these subjects. We concentrate on the implementation of different modules of this system such as the learning phase, the video phase and test phase. The system evaluates the student’s state of knowledge through questions and depending on the specific percentage and level of questions they answer correctly; it will guide them through a lesson plan tailored to their learning needs.  The tutorial videos will be as short as possible and it’s straight to the point.

1.6  Significance of the study

This project work helps reduce the costs and problems associated with delivering training in the manual process. Multimedia tutorial Increases the effectiveness of the learning environment, stress frees, a student can see his pace, whenever and wherever and video captures almost 100% concentration of students. This project work also reduces the problems associated with learning in an overcrowded classroom.

1.7  Limitation of the study

The mobile-based java tutorial and certification system is an android based software which consists of PDF and videos about Java programming languages. It is an information system with additional features. The user can take an online test, after which he/she is offered a certificate. Users are limited to asking questions and having a real life interaction with the tutor. The tutorials are limited to users that have an internet connection on their computer.

1.8  Definition of terms

Android SDK: The Android SDK (software development kit) is a set of development tools used to develop applications for the Android platform.

Android: Android is a software for mobile phones, tablets and a growing range of devices covering everything from wearable computing to in-car entertainment.

Android is also a mobile operating system developed by Google. It is used by several smartphones and tablets.

XML – Extended Markup Language: is commonly used as the format for receiving server data, although any format, including plain text, can be used.

ADB: ABD stands for Android Debug Bridge, a tool that is used primarily by developers to send commands from a computer to android.

APK: Android Application Package file used to distribute and install applications.

Android Manifest: Describes the fundamental characteristics of the application and defines each of its components.

Debugger: A debugger is a computer program used by programmers to test and debug a target program.

E-learning –   learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the Internet.

Java: Java is a programming language that produces software for multiple platforms.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) – the proposed system’s interface design

Programming Languages – are the topics or content of the application.

Multimedia – the combined use of several media, as sound and full-motion video in computer applications.

Portable Document Format (PDF) – a file format for capturing and sending electronic documents in exactly the intended format.

ICT – Information and Communication Technology.

Online – Directly connected to the computer and under the influence (control) of the central processing unit (CPU).
