CHAPTER ONE

• INTRODUCTION

Whether you are having doubts about the effectiveness and legitimacy of online electronic tutoring and student evaluations, or you still have a few questions and would like some more information, this research work will allow you to make an informed choice that suits your student’s online needs and the effectiveness of online examination and evaluating system. This project research marked some important ways to reduce the teacher/lecturer efforts of measuring student’s learning and understanding by automating the way they evaluate student test and examination. This chapter talks more about the processes involved in marking and evaluating student with the conventional ways of handling student examination grading and result processing in its background of study using Federal Polytechnic Nekede as a case study. It also identified some issues affecting these conventional ways and processes and in the existing multiple choice computers marking in its statement of problems as well as suggested the possible solutions through the objectives of study. The chapter also talks about the significance, the scope as well as the limitations faced during the course of carrying out this research.

• THE BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Answers essay typed examination requires the students to write their answers in short Online Examination System is a web base application that establishes a network between an institution and candidates or students. Institutes enter on the site and input questions they want in the examination; these questions are displayed as a test to the eligible students. The answers enter by the students are then evaluated and their score is calculated and saved. This score then can be accessed by the institutes to determine the number of students that passes the examination and evaluate their performance. Online examinations are conducted through the internet or in an intranet if within the Organization to test a remote candidate. Candidate is given a limited time to answer the questions and after the time expiry the answer paper is disabled automatically and answers is sent to the examiner. Online Examinations System provides a platform to select eligible candidate out of numerous candidate that participate in an examination. The institution has an administrator who keeps an eye on the overall functioning of the system.

The online examinations system is application software, which aims at providing services to the institution with an option of selecting the eligible students or candidate without any politics or partiality. Online examinations are conducted through the internet or in an intranet (if within the Organization) to test a remote candidate. Candidate is given a limited time to answer the questions and after thetime expiry the answer paper is disabled automatically and answers is sent to the examiner. The examiner will evaluate answers, either through automated process or manually and the results will be sent to the candidate through email or made available in the web site. Online examination system will help to evaluate student’s achievement, and helps to give fair scores. The main objective of Online Examination System is to efficiently evaluate the candidate thoroughly through a fully automated system that not only saves lot of time but also gives fast results. For teachers, it would give flexibility to fit their needs and to the students there will be no loss in time for the need of using extra thing like paper, pen etc. This system also focuses on how to provide a secure environment for Online Examination.

In this study, Federal Polytechnic Nekede has been chosen as the case study. Examination in Federal Polytechnic Nekede is conduct manually. During examination students always looking for center, due to this some student who are not familiarize with the school infrastructure miss the examination. Every morning before the examination commence, the school will paste each examination center on the notice board

• THE STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Federal Polytechnic Nekede follows a manual process of examination administration and problems like these:

1. Omission of Student Result
2. Errors in Result Computation
3. Time wasting in marking of the answer scripts
4. Missing of Examination script during marking
5. Violation of the rules and regulations of the Institution

• THE OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The main aim of this project is to design and implement an online exam system. The specific objectives are

1. To develop a system that will be running on intranet network which will help to eliminate malpractice and Omission of student result.
2. To develop a system which will work with the help of a relational database to store examination question and can also store student score to eliminate omission of student result and also eliminate printing of question papers and answer booklets.

• To develop a system which can be able to mark the exam and display a student result immediately after the exam which will help to eliminate student missing his/her examination script.

1. To develop a system for lecturers to upload exam questions and which will reduce the wasting of marking answer script.

• THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This research work is limited to online examination system for higher institutions which will also consider the various methods of writing examination using the computer as an educational tool. The target users are the lecturers and students. The application is web based instead of a standalone application. Reasons for a web based application is simply because of regular accessibility of the system and other benefits associated with online applications. Therefore, this project covers some area in computer science like database management and information processing, the effective use of web development tools and software development approach.

• THE SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY

This system will ensure adequate examination system for all Federal Polytechnic Nekede students.

1. This system will be of great importance for the management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, helping them to save money spent in printing of answer booklet and question paper for examination.
2. It will also help the student to be sure that the score he/she got in a course is the score he/she is supposed to get.

• And also relieve the staff of the Institution the stress of marking of answer scripts

• THE LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

Few setbacks were encountered during the course of this research work, they are as follows

1. The cost of surfing the internet
2. Lack of power supply

• Insufficient library materials for this research work

1.8       DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Administration: the activities that relate to running a company, school, or other organization or a group of people who manage the way a company, school, or other organization functions.
2. Courseware: computer programs or other material designed for use in an educational or training course.

• Data: These are new facts and figures sent into the computer for processing

1. Database: A collection of persistent data that can be shared and interrupted.
2. Examination: this is a process of testing students’ ability after a period of training and studying.
3. Hypertext Documents: They are documents written with HTML, ASP, ASP.Net, PHP, Java Script Pages (JSP), Code Fusion, and Programming Languages.

• Internet: It is an interaction of computer networks connecting other networks from computers, companies, houses etc.
• Marking: Marking is simply scoring and evaluating a student result based on a written examination.

1. Server: This is a program or (pc) which relays information to a client pc.
2. Storage Devices: a device for storing data in the computer
3. System: The collection of interrelated components, which interact regularly to perform a task.

• WWW (World Wide Web): It is a multimedia interface that connects us to resources such as documents, e-mails, chat, web sites that are available on the internet with the computer.
