CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
An evaluation of funding home missions is a response to the reactions of missionaries on the basis of little or no assistance for missions from individuals, groups or churches that may have sent them. The researcher has discovered an impression that the Bible is not a book about theology as such, but rather, a record of theology in missions (God in action on behalf of the salvation of mankind) with assistance from individuals, people and those who helped in making it reach to the most hidden locations of the world today. Following the view of (Georg, 2009) “the Bible in its totality ascribes only one intention to God: to save mankind. And the end result will be the glorification of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Furthermore, it is discovered that the missionary task bears within it something of the nature of the ultimate, something that centuries, circumstances nor cultures can change; which therefore demands a good concentration and may be altered by funding role.
The church represents a body of priests on mission to evangelize the world to Christ while awaiting His returns. The great commission in (Mathew 28 verse 16-20) speaks of the church as one body and entity in Christ not as a divided institution as seen today. The great commission contains an important mission the church should pursue in the world, considering his words;
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”( Matt. 28:19-20 NIV). Only, few commentators dealt exhaustively with the great commission passages. Dr Karl Barth, a scholar in the theology of Christian mission and Dr R. D. Culver who published in the Bulletin of the Evangelical Theological Society. The researcher sees them to have only a partial presentation of the great commission because both men, however, failed to see the total scope of the great commission but limited their studies to only the gospel of Mathew. The interpretation of the great commission passages as the researcher further discovers, has differed greatly through the centuries and has caused a great deal of discussion. Debate has revolved around the address of the words and brought questions; were they spoken to the disciples as the apostles of Jesus Christ or as representatives of the church of Jesus Christ and thus exists as a part of the church’s commission unto the end of the age? Evangelical scholarship has sought to answer some of these questions, believing that the commission is addressed to the church and must be obeyed unto the end of the age. The church both as individual and institution however has roles to play.
This draws us closer to the primary objective of the church missionary society in the world from time past till date. The church missionary society was established on the basis of encouraging and assisting reformed churches throughout the world to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, and taking the gospel to every nations. The missionary goal is transforming people while Christianizing plays the part of making these people turned Christians. Christianization is also the proclamation of salvation in Christ to those who do not believe in him, calling them to repentance and conversion, announcing forgiveness of sin, and inviting them to become living members of Christ’s earthly community and to begin a life of service to others in the power of the Holy Spirit” (Bosh 1991, pg:10). This study however centres on the evaluation of funding home missions in the light of III John 2-8 using Christ Apostolic Church Abakaliki district, as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Considering the myriads of challenges of evangelism as a result of funding problems for missions with its alarming effects on the growth of the body of Christ and the deficiency in the propagation of the gospel in reaching the unreached, the researcher is prepared to critically analyse and explain the III Epistle of John with emphasis on the evaluation of funding home missions. In addition, having observed the deficiency and slackness in the propagation of the gospel due to some sagas in ethics of the missionaries and funding role, this study proffered viable solutions to curb this menace that hinders the propagation of the gospel for home missions today.
1.3 Purpose of the study
This research is carried out in order to achieve the following purposes:
- To analyse what funding home missions is with the aim of addressing all misconceptions about it.
- To educate missionaries on the biblical standard and ethics of funding home missions.
- To examine the challenges of funding home missions in today’s church.
- To understand the contributions of effective funding of home missions to church growth.
- To suggest ways to enhance and promote church growth under an effective funding.
1.4 Research Questions
The following questions were carefully formulated to guide the study;
- What are the challenges of funding home missions in today’s church?
- What are the contributions of effective funding of home missions to church growth?
- What are the biblical standard for funding home missions according to the epistle of III John 2?
- What are the ways to enhance and promote church growth under an effective funding?
1.5 The Significance of the Study
The research work will make useful contributions in the following ways:
It will develop pastors of churches and leaders on funding home missions for church growth.
It will contribute greatly to the growth of the Christ Apostolic Church Ministry and other denominations.
It will serve as a resource material for those studying missions and scripture researchers on similar topics.
It will help Christian leaders and missionaries to make necessary corrections where needed and improve their missionary involvement and commitments.
1.6 Delimitation of the Study
This study is concerned mainly with an evaluation of funding home missions in the light of III John 2-8 using Christ Apostolic Church Abakaliki district as a case study. However, the result and recommendations will be useful for other denominations.
1.7 Research Procedure
The population of this study is Christ Apostolic Church, Abakaliki district. Library and field works involving the use of self-administered questionnaire and personal oral interviews were used. The population for this study includes;
The church leaders
The missionaries
The church members.
The questionnaire and interviews were designed to get comprehensive responses of the church leaders, the missionaries and church members alike, to determine and get their views on funding home missions.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
This study was largely confronted with the inability of respondent and interviewees to meet up time schedule for interview appointment. Submission and returning of survey was also delayed as some were reluctant to give needed information.
1.9 Definition of terms
Evaluation
An intense act of considering something to decide how useful or valuable it is.
Funding
An amount of money used for a specific purpose; a sum of money or intangible resources whose principal or interest is set apart for a specific objective.
